CCTV appeal to find man clutching beer on bike after victim set upon in sickening unprovoked attack on the Wirral

A taxi driver was battered round the head and put in hospital after a thug launched an unprovoked attack on him and smashed up his car during sickening scenes on the Wirral.

Today police issued CCTV images of man clutching a box of lager in a shop and on a bike who they would like to speak to as part of their probe into shocking attack in Wallasey.

Police said the the 52-year-old taxi driver was reversing his silver Ford Mondeo out at the junction of Ilford Avenue and Poulton Road when his attacker started verbally abusing him.

A police spokesperson said: "The man then assaulted the driver by punching him to the face and hitting him over the head before causing damage to the car."

The man suffered cuts to his head and cuts and bruising to an arm and hand as a result of the unprovoked attack around 6.25pm on Sunday, May 9.

Damage was also caused to the roof of the victim's taxi.

Merseyside Police say they believe the man in the CCTV images "could assist with the investigation".

Detective Inspector Tom Clarke said: “This was a nasty and unprovoked attack on an innocent man minding his own business and we are determined to catch the person responsible.

“I would ask the man in the images, or anyone who recognises him to contact us as we believe he may have information which is vital to our enquiries.”

Wonder if him careering along the pavement on a bike while carrying a box of lager had anything to do with how he got tangled up with a driver who was reversing at a junction

Or at least I'm assuming the cycling photo was taken after he left the shop but before the incident - the padlock and chain round his kneck seem to have disappeared. And what's the padlock and chain all about anyway - has he broken loose from somewhere, or what? :-s

Photos actually taken at different times, I'm guessing, hence why the padlock is missing in the bike photo.

Thought the clothes looked a bit different, but thought maybe just the indoor/outdoor and different cameras making the colours look dissimilar. But on the bike his clothes all look the same shade of colour, while in the shop his top and bottoms look different, so who knows, although that would also be explained if the photos taken at different times.

Someone in the Echo's comments suggested that the padlock and chain may be for his bike. I thought it was maybe some kind of extreme jewelry, but the bike theory sounds plausible, but why put the chain round your neck while your bike is outside, but the chain disappears when he's back on the bike?

Of course, that could also be partly explainable if the photos were taken at different times.

Fascinating, though

Hello; Liverpool no padlock and chain=stolen bike

I suspect ph reversing got in his way and as many do he decided to have a go at the driver who probably hadn't seen him as he was on the path

Be very surprised if that thug isn't named.

Actually surprised the police needed to publish the CCTV as I suspect the police have come into contact with him a number of times.
