A taxi driver who fatally injured a woman pedestrian was warned by a judge to expect a prison sentence.

Anis Mohamed admitted causing the death of 37-year-old Natasha Baker by carelessly driving a blue Vauxhall Vivaro minibus in Coleman Road, Evington, on Saturday January 11 last year.

The tragedy happened at 4.10am near an entrance to the General Hospital.

Ms Baker, of Leicester, sustained serious injuries and later died.

Mohamed, of Humberstone Drive, in the city, entered his guilty plea at Leicester Crown Court.

His barrister, Grahame James, said the defendant was a 64-year-old family man who had no previous convictions.

The prosecutor, Philip Gibbs, did not outline the circumstances of the Crown's case, which was adjourned.

Judge Timothy Spencer QC postponed sentencing until next month.

He told Mohamed: "You've pleaded guilty, as you appreciate, to a very serous offence.

"You are looking at being locked up.

"You need to be as prepared as you can be to go to prison when I sentence you."

Mohamed was given an interim driving disqualification, pending the next hearing.

Before being released on bail, he acknowledged that he understood he was being immediately banned from driving.

Not sure how the procedures work with regard to this type of thing, but odd that there's nothing disclosed about what happened at this stage.

But he's admitted it, and given the judge's remarks it must be something of an open and shut case :?

Maybe he feels genuine remorse for what happened hence full cooperation

not much traffic would have been around at that time and roads are quite wide in that area so maybe foot was down a tad

I suspect the inns and outs will be discussed at the sentencing time.

The adjournment is for a report from the probation service.

If I was a gambler, on the little info we have in front of us, I would say he will get a suspended sentence.

I thought it was a mandatory prison sentence if someone was killed ?

Nope.

Even if it were mandatory a court could choose to suspend the sentence should they wish to.

The sentencing guideline below shows a person could be found guilty and merely be sentenced to a community order.
