Obviously nothing particularly out of the ordinary about this. But I wonder if we'll be seeing more of this kind of thing in view of recent events :?

I mean, presumably the authorities don't want to be acccused of hypocrisy if it's pointed out that these things seem to be more of a problem when the targets are people earning a million pounds a month and who are abused on twitter, rather than gig economy workers targetted on the streets and at their place of work :-|

Purely coincidental, I'm sure, but think this is the same rank featured a few days ago in the news article about card payment issues, or at least it's in the same Barbican area of Plymouth.

The alleged incident happened at night on The Barbican

Police are appealing for witnesses after reports of a "racially aggravated verbal assault" in Plymouth.

The victim, a man, was said to have been racially abused at a taxi rank in Basket Ope, on the Barbican.

The incident was reported to have happened on Friday, June 18, between 10.40pm and 10.50pm.

A statement issued by the force on Wednesday afternoon said: "Officers are appealing for witnesses following reports of a racially aggravated verbal assault which happened on Friday 18 June in Basket Ope, Barbican, in Plymouth.

"Between 10.40pm and 10.50pm, it was reported that a man was racially abused at a taxi rank.

"The police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that could help the police with their enquiries.

"Please email 101@dc.police.uk or call 101, quoting crime reference number CR/050484/21."

Is 'verbal assault' a specific crime? :-s

Anyway, I initially assumed the target here was a taxi driver, but the piece doesn't actually state that - it just says the 'assault' took place at a taxi rank :?

The mere threat of an assault, or if the victim believes an assault is imminent, can both be charged as Common Assault, and the racial aspect increases the penalty on conviction.
