Fines for Flint taxi driver who took cocaine and was abusive to police

A FLINT taxi driver became abusive with police officers after taking cocaine for the first time, a court heard.

Jamie Roberts, of Maes Gwyn, appeared at Mold Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The 29-year-old admitted that on July 18 he resisted police and was drunk and disorderly at Maes Gwyn, as well as being found to be in possession of cocaine at Llay Police Station.

Anouska Youds, prosecuting, told the court in the early hours of the morning, police received a call from Roberts.

He told them he wanted to take his own life.

Officers located him in Chester Road, Flint, where he appeared to be intoxicated and under the influence of drugs.

He was agitated but he agreed to return to his mother's home to get some sleep and seek help the next day.

When they arrived however, he became argumentative and then aggressive.

He left and started to run off, stumbling into the road and shouting abuse at the police.

When the officers caught up to him he continued with the abuse and threw his arms around.

He was arrested for being drunk and disorderly, but due to the level of resistance he presented, he had to be taken to the ground and handcuffed.

When in custody, a snap bag with white powder was found in his possession.

It was tested and confirmed to be cocaine.

The court heard Roberts had no previous convictions.

Euros Jones, defending, said: "Mr Roberts would like to apologise to the officers and thank them for their help."

He added his client suffers from depression and "knows now that alcohol and drugs are not the answer."

On July 18 he had taken cocaine for the first time, Mr Jones said.

"He is a taxi driver," he added, "Which might mean he has to go before the licensing committee."

District Judge Gwyn Jones said: "It is clear that on the night in question, you took substances which were unfamiliar to you and they had the wrong effect.

"That's the danger when you take substances and you don't know what's going to happen.

"The licensing committee of Flintshire County Council will be in touch with you to speak about your hackney carriage licence, which may mean that being suspended.

"If you don't speak to them they will take that as an aggravating feature."

The Judge handed down a £75 fine for resisting the police, a £75 fine for the possession of cocaine and ordered the defendant to pay £85 costs, as well as a £34 victim surcharge.

A judge suggesting how a licensing committee should conduct itself?

Who'd have expected that?

they won't like that ! I wouldn't be at all surprised if they do something unexpected to send a message to the judge to that effect

Thin line, though, and irrespective of the precise wording the words of a judge are always potentially impactful, although whether that helps or hinders the driver is anyone's guess, and will depend on individual councillors.

And he's quite categorical about not speaking to them being an 'aggravating feature'.

Of course, all that's maybe self-evident, thus the judge's words are of no relevance.

But reminds me of that Fife case a couple of years ago, when as I recall it the new applicant had a criminal damage conviction, and didn't turn up to three scheduled licensing hearings.

So they got fed up and granted the badge anyway
