This is an official Met news release.

Nothing particularly new here, but interesting that he was found not guilty of the sexual assault, but guilty of false imprisonment with intent to commit sexual assault :-o

Which should be self-evident from the facts as portrayed below, but unfortunately there's zero information about the alleged facts that led to the sexual assault charge per se :?

A man has been convicted of kidnap and false imprisonment with intent to commit sexual assault.

Isaac Mabwa, 33 (13.06.88) of Melville Avenue, Ealing, appeared at Harrow Crown Court on Tuesday, 24 August where he was convicted of kidnap, false imprisonment and committing an offence (false imprisonment) with intent to commit a sexual offence. He was found not guilty of sexual assault.

Mabwa had previously pleaded not guilty to all four charges at the beginning of his trial on Monday, 16 August.

Mabwa was remanded in custody to appear for sentencing on a date/at a venue to be confirmed.

The court heard that in the early hours of 8 May 2017, Mabwa was driving a hire car in central London.

At around the same time, the female victim, who was aged 25 at the time of the offence, was walking on Euston Road after a night out and was trying to get home. Mabwa stopped his car and offered to give her a lift home.

The victim believed that she was getting into a taxi or minicab. Shortly after getting in, she realised that it was, in fact, not a taxi and Mabwa was driving her further away from her home address in the opposite direction.

During, the journey of approximately an hour and a half, the victim tried to get out of the vehicle a number of times but Mabwa prevented her from doing so.

She was able to message her boyfriend and friend during the journey and she sent her location so they could find her.

Mabwa eventually pulled the car into an unlit car park. The victim began to scream.

A member of the public heard the victim’s screams and called police as the victim struggled and managed to escape from the vehicle.

Mabwa left the car park in the vehicle and was detained by police a short time later.

Following a complex and lengthy investigation, detectives charged Mabwa in April 2020.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Brien, said: “This case is an example of the tireless efforts made by our officers to bring offenders such as Isaac Mabwa, who commit violent offences against women and girls, to justice.

“We encourage anyone who has been a victim of a sexual offence to come forward and speak to police. You will be supported by specially trained officers throughout the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.”

Close observers may notice that it's my thread title that calls the perp a fake [cab] driver, while the Met only mention the t-word with regard to the victim's perception rather than the perp's.

So arguably nothing to suggest it was his intention to pose as a fake licensed driver - maybe he was just cruising and looking to pick up women.

But the Sun has rehashed the Met's press release from a fake driver perspective:

CAB PREDATOR Fake taxi driver who kidnapped woman, 25, on night out in bid to carry out sex attack faces jail

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/15963528/ ... ped-woman/

A FAKE taxi driver kidnapped a terrified woman in a bid to sexually assault her after she got into her car.

And for pedants, note that the Sun has replaced the Met's 'taxi or minicab' with simply 'cab'.

The Met wrote:
The victim believed that she was getting into a taxi or minicab.

She thought she was getting into a cab...

But note that the Ealing Times has been more faithful to the Met's take on the case, and you wouldn't immediately think that the perp was posing as a licensed driver, as opposed to a boy racer, or whatever :?

Clearly lack of evidence, but in the end it's a moot issue as the kidnapping offence will see the fella doing a number of years inside.

Man who posed as taxi driver to kidnap woman, 25, in central London jailed

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/i ... 69171.html

A man who posed as a taxi driver to kidnap a young woman as she walked home in central London has been jailed.

Isaac Mabwa, of Melville Avenue, Ealing, was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment at Wood Green Crown Court on Monday and put on the sex offenders register for life.

The 33-year-old was previously found guilty of kidnap, false imprisonment and committing an offence with intent to comment a sexual offence at Harrow Crown Court in August.

His trial heard how he drove a hire car through central London when he came across a 25-year-old woman walking home on Euston Road in the early hours of May 8, 2017.

He stopped his car and offered the woman a lift home.

Believing he was driving a taxi or minicab, the victim got into the car but Mabwa quickly began driving in the opposite direction away from her home.

She tried to get out of the car several times but Mabwa stopped her, jurors heard. She was able to message her boyfriend and a friend and sent them her location.

After around 90 minutes, Mabwa stopped at an unlit car park and the victim began to scream.

The screams alerted a member of the public and she was able to escape from the car.

Mabwa left the car park and was detained by police a short time later. Following a lengthy investigation, he was charged in April 2020.

"This was a terrifying experience for the young woman involved who was targeted while walking home from a night out,” said Detective Constable Natalie Witt, who worked on the investigation.

"Her bravery and support for the investigation means Isaac Mabwa is no longer a risk to other women, and while today is not a day to celebrate, I hope the sentence allows her some closure.

"I recognise that details of this awful crime will cause fear among the community, particularly women, and I would like to reassure you that the Met is doing everything it can to make the streets of London safer for everyone."

I never said you were wrong just pointing out that sometimes courts can be VERY lenient

I think there is a big difference between a driver keeping a customer locked in their car because there is a dispute over the fare, and a driver keeping a person in the car with sexual intent.
