Good on them.

Will be one of the best investments the council and the trade could ever make. =D>

The scheme will be extended to ph vehicles if successful, which it surely will be.

Assuming, of course, that the money well doesn't run dry.

It's hoped the move will improve safety and boost the city's night time economy

Black cab taxi operators in Hull are to be offered council grants of £500 to install CCTV in their vehicles.

It's hoped the cameras will improve safety for drivers and customers.

The grants are part of the Council’s Covid response to support economic recovery from the pandemic.

The grants are now available for to apply for Hackney Carriage drivers to apply for via an online form.

Councillor Aneesa Akbar, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: "The CCTV grants initiative is part of the Council’s Covid response. The night-time economy of the city continues to be negatively impacted by the pandemic.

"The introduction of CCTV systems in hackney carriages will help to provide higher levels of safety and security for drivers and customers."

The initiative will be reviewed after a period of operation and subject to demand, feedback and the availability of funding, consideration will be given to widening eligibility to include licensed Private Hire Vehicles.

The scheme is not compulsory and proprietors in Hull are invited to apply for the funding on a voluntary basis.

But looks entirely voluntary at this stage, so £500 is quite generous and therefore take up should be good.

But I wonder what conditions the council will attach to the grants? If it's too onerous/intrusive then that will affect the take up rate, obviously...
