The elderly man was walking on Collingwood Gardens in North Shields when he was knocked over by a taxi

An investigation is under way after a pensioner was allegedly knocked over by a taxi driver in North Shields.

Police are now appealing for the taxi driver to come forward.

At about 6.50pm on Tuesday (October 5) a 76-year-old man was walking on Collingwood Gardens near the junction with Kettlewood Terrace when he was knocked over.

The driver of the taxi stopped at the scene and looked after the pensioner, it is believed.

The man then drove the victim to North Tyneside General Hospital on Rake Lane and escorted him into the Accident and Emergency reception.

The victim’s injuries are now described as serious.

The man is unaware of the identity of the taxi driver who took him to hospital, so police are now appealing for him to come forward.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Officers would like to speak to him as they continue to carry out enquiries into the collision.

"The taxi driver is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of their website or by calling 101 quoting reference NP-20211006-0335."

Alternatively, you can contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously by ringing 0800 555 111.

Not sure why they've bothered with the a-word in the first line of the article here. They've already found the driver guilty in both the headline and strapline
