Taxi driver 'stumbled out of cab' before blowing over twice the limit, police say

Police say they watched a drunk taxi driver stumble out of his car before picking up members of the public to give a lift.

Officers were left stunned after coming across the drink driver cabbie in Bury at the weekend.

Greater Manchester Police says officers spotted the taxi being driver 'erratically' in the town centre on Saturday (January 29).

After being stopped by police, the taxi driver failed a breathalyser test and was arrested.

He then took another breathalyser test while in police custody, where he was found to be over twice the legal limit - at 77 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath, compared to the legal limit of 35.

GMP says it reported the incident to the local authority he was licensed with as a taxi driver.

In a post on Twitter, a spokesperson for GMP Special Constabulary wrote: "[Operation] Lynx - Bury town centre.

"Officers spot a taxi driving erratically, then stumble out his cab to collect passengers.

"Officers intercept and conduct a roadside alcohol breath test which the driver failed.

"Driver arrested and blew 77 in custody!

"Oh, and taxi licensing notified."

Greater Manchester Police was approached for further comment.

I remember many years ago one of the lads had a drink problem that he kept to himself.

Nice enough fella who one week would speak to everyone, and the next week acted the hermit.

Picked up a punter late one night when p***** out of his head. The punter rang the office straight really worried about him and anyone he picked up that night.

By the time the office tried to contact him he had crashed the motor into a bus stop and killed himself.

Thankfully no one else was involved, but what a waste of a life.
