The extra charge is being put in place because of financial struggles at the airport due to Covid

Heathrow Airport is set to introduce a £5 charge for cars dropping off passengers from the first week in November.

The charge will be introduced from November 1 and it comes as a result of the airport losing two billion pounds during the pandemic.

This means that it is highly likely your taxi charge will increase when getting dropped off at the airport in the future.

The airport will not be introducing barriers to implement the fee and instead the service will be operated via number plate recognition cameras.

If you decide to park up to drop off a friend at the country's busiest airport you’ll be in sticky waters if you don’t pay an £80 parking charge notice (PCN).

This will be reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days.

The £5 drop off fee is set to be payable online, via mobile phone, automated telephone service or by autopay functionality.

Heathrow has also said clear signage on roads in and around the airport will be introduced to ensure drivers are fully aware of chargeable areas.

The charge cannot be paid at an airport ticket machine or in the terminal drop-off zones. The normal car parks will still be available which won’t require an extra fiver.

A free drop off option is also available at Heathrow’s long stay car parks. Here passengers can take a shuttle bus to the airport.

A Heathrow spokesperson told My London on July 26: “These changes will ensure we remain on track to reach our long-term goals of providing sustainable, affordable transport options into the future, whilst safeguarding the business financially, as we look to recover from this crisis”.

Heathrow Airport says the charge will "contribute towards a new sustainable transport initiative at the airport."

Wouldn't have bothered with this, as it's not specifically about taxis, and the topic has been covered before.

But had a rare trip down to EDI last week (all the rarer in the last couple of years because of you-know-what - my last drop there was at an airport hotel which didn't incur any drop charge), and I obviously haven't been paying attention, because the drop-off fee is now £4, which is arguably more than Heathrow in terms of relative cost of living prices etc.

So you drive into what was once a bog standard multi-story car park, and I was stationary for about 30 seconds (one person, only hand luggage). Spent a lot longer queueing for the exit barriers and paying. In fact I took longer to actually pay the fee than dropping the passenger :-o

So you throw the money into the barrier, and of course several of my coins were rejected. Funny, never usually have much problem with rejected coins elsewhere, but I'm sure it's just a coincidence :?

Not even sure if the rejected coins are given back, but couldn't actually look into the likely bowl-shaped thing at the bottom of the machine to see without getting out of the car, which was of course difficult because of how close you need to be to it to get the coins in the slot (and my arms aren't the longest). So rather than just get further stressed and incur the ire of the cars queueing behind me at 5am, I just kept putting the coins in, and I'm sure I put in £7 altogether until the machine's computer 'didn't say NO' :cry:

I'm sure it's easier for airport regulars, but every time I seem to go there there seems to be something even slightly different that, er, discombobulates me.

Which is why I normally don't go fishing for airport runs, but it's otherwise an easy drive at that time of night/morning and having waited over two hours on the rank earlier that night I couldn't really afford to forgo the run :?

This was originally advertised as starting in october but mid september there were no signs up explaining how it would work

have a car that picked up at T3 hal;f an hour ago will ask him later if there is any signage.

I assume it will be like the dart toll and you will be clocked on an ANPR camera and have to pay over the interweb within 24 hours

Oh and £4.00 is on a par with the cheapest airports like southend which has so little traffic it is closing in 2 weeks !

£5.00 seems to be the going rate except greedy Stansted :sad:

Only needs 400,000,000 cars to drop off to get that money back then. :-k

Defo use the autopay function.

About 30% of my drop-off charges at Gatwick since the charge came in haven't come through. :D

It will be a lot less than that when you add in the fines for failing to pay.

the scheme will probably be administered by a private company so Heathrow will receive a percentage of the charge after fees deducted and originally announced that this was to pay for the third runway

I doubt it will pay for that but should generate £50 to £70 million a year which will help convince banks and institutions that they have a revenue stream which makes them a less risky business to lend to and I suspect that is more likely to be the scenario behind the decision

To tackle growing air pollution problems, the plan is to introduce the world’s first airport Ultra Low Emission Zone (the Heathrow ULEZ) in 2022 and charge passenger cars and all private hire vehicles (excluding black cabs, initially).

The news comes in the wake of similar plans from up and down the country, and despite Coventry claiming that a charging Clean Air Zone won’t reduce emissions any quicker.

Vehicles entering car parks or drop-off areas at any of Heathrow’s terminals, 24/7, will be required to meet the same criteria as the London ULEZ – Euro 4 petrols and Euro 6 diesels – else the charge will be between a proposed £10-15,

I believe the GLC has plans to extend their ulez out to the M25 eventually so looks like Heathrow are getting in first

according to one of my drivers that dropped off at T5 today they are installing exit barriers at which you pay

so the queues are going to be horrendous at certain times of day :roll:

Very surprised if that's the case.

I suspect it will be camera activated.
