Pretty bog standard, but you often wonder which planet the people who write this kind of stuff are on :-s

Safety Advice for ‘Night on the Town’ Festive Revellers

https://www.ribblevalley.gov.uk/news/ar ... _revellers

Published Thursday, 16 December 2021

Festive revellers are reminded to look after themselves and each other if they come to Ribble Valley for a night on the town.

They are reminded not to use unlicensed taxis or flag down private hire vehicles over the festive season and follow these steps to ensure a safe journey:

    • ‘Yellow plate’ private hire vehicles must be pre-booked. Only ‘blue plate’ hackney carriages can be flagged down or hired from a taxi rank and it is illegal for private hire vehicles to pick up passengers in the street, unless they are pre-booked
    • Check drivers are wearing identification badges that have not expired
    • Check the identity of drivers against photographs on identification badges
    • Check that cab licence plates at the back of vehicles or on the left-hand side of windscreens are in date
    • Do not give personal details to drivers
    • Agree private hire fees in advance with operators (hackney cab fees are set by the council)

Ribble Valley Borough Council’s register of licensed operators, vehicles and drivers featuring the names of taxi licence holders, along with licence numbers, issue and expiry dates, and licence terms, is available at ribblevalley.gov.uk.

Members of the public can use the register to ensure drivers and vehicles are licensed, which means they will be safe, comfortable and roadworthy, and that drivers have a reasonable knowledge of the area, are medically fit and free from serious convictions.

Anyone who suspects a taxi firm of operating without a licence or a driver of driving without a licence, or using an unlicensed vehicle, is asked to contact the council’s licensing team on 01200 414411.

[For what it's worth, the rest of the council's statement is about drink spiking etc]

This council used the t-word generically, and is otherwise consistent with the use of the HC and PHV terms. But shouldn't that be 'hackney rank' rather than 'taxi rank' to be consistent? The other day Carlisle used the term hackney rank.

Who on this earth has ever checked an expiry date on a badge, particularly one that the driver is wearing?

Ditto photos. I mean, maybe some people can check the photo, but it would have to be a pretty obvious mismatch to notice a dodgy badge if the driver is wearing it.

My badge is on the dash, and to be fair the odd person has asked if it's actually me 8-[ , but more in a taking the pish style rather than seriously doubting my credentials O:)

Yes, let's check that taxi that's just rolled up on the register on the council's website while I have difficulty standing up and there's 100 people in the rank queue behind me

A bit like the Carlisle one - maybe they should be a bit more cautious about claiming licensed cars and drivers are automatically safe and roadworthy. I mean, suppose it's a John Worboys, or the myriad others featured on here who're not quite such serial offenders or so high profile.

And, just last year, an eight vehicle spot check in Ribble Valley found two that were served notice requiring repairs within seven days, and one taken off the road.

They're a bit more cautious about a driver only having *reasonable* knowledge of the area, and that they're free from *serious* convictions, thus not necessarily conviction-free.

Point taken, but my example was obviously exaggerated for effect [-(

As for 100 queueing in St Andrews, to see anyone queuing at the ranks at all is an achievement

Don't get p***ed out of your minds.

Don't lose your phone or your money.

Don't expect a cab if you've p***ed yourself or spewed up.

They check nothing, never have and never will.
