Uber driver, 65, left with bloodshot eyes after vicious attackers punched him and snatched his iPhone 13

An Uber driver claims he was savagely attacked by three of his customers, leaving him with two bloodshot eyes and multiple bruises. The 65-year-old, who wanted to remain anonymous, also says his phone was stolen during the assault.

The driver was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary following the incident, where a CT scan was performed, as well as an eye examination. He did not sustain any serious injuries.

The alleged attack took place on Sunday, September 11, at around 4:40am. The Uber driver said he picked up three passengers - 2 females and a male - from the 2FunkyLounge on New Parks Street.

According to the driver, the passengers wanted to be dropped off at a Shell garage on Narborough road, a location different from the one that they had entered in the app. He says he asked them to go onto the Uber app and change the destination - the customary procedure when switching destinations mid-ride - and the customers refused to do so.

The driver says that in the past, customers have taken advantage by not entering the right destination - resulting in them having free or cheaper rides. When the driver refused to drop them off at Shell, he says they lashed out at him.

The driver's daughter, Muna Elmi, posted dash cam footage and images to her Instagram of the people she believes are responsible for punching her father multiple times and swearing at him. In the video circulating online, the driver can be heard asking the customers to give him back his phone.

According to Muna, 27, the alleged suspects also ripped her father's dash cam from the rear view mirror. She also claims that the male passenger who was sitting behind the driver's seat held her father's shoulder - restraining him and preventing him from being able to protect himself.

Muna also says that one of the female passengers used her shoe to hit her father. She said: “Luckily, the incident happened near our house, so my dad was able to come home quickly and we took him to A&E - where we waited for seven hours.”

“Although there were no long-lasting physical effects, the situation has been extremely stressful for my dad. It’s heart-breaking and the behaviour of those involved is disgusting.

“All my dad was trying to do was his job and earn a living, so to be viciously attacked by three people, and he couldn’t even defend himself, is disgusting.”

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “Detectives are currently investigating a robbery which was reported to have happened at around 4.40am on Sunday, September 11. It was reported that a taxi driver – a man in his 60s – had been assaulted by three passengers inside his taxi in the area of Duns Lane and St Augustine Road.”

“The driver was punched by the group but did not suffer serious injuries. He also reported his phone was taken before the group left the taxi.”

Police have said that inquiries into the incident are continuing. No arrests have been made at this time.

The daughter has included some more stuff on Twitter (link below), including some (internal) dashcam footage. It's a bit dark to see much, but make sure sound is turned on.

She's also included a map, which shows the alleged detour they wanted the driver to take. Obviously I used Google to calculate the distance ( ), and it's a detour of well over a mile, and no doubt a bit of fannying around at the Shell garage ](*,)

So I suppose it's all related to Uber's fixed fare model, but of course issues like that hardly confined to Uber...

But the dashcam video has been viewed more than 70,000 times, and with the reasonably good photos and all the publicity via the Leicester Mercury, and because it's an app booking, presumably these people *will* be held to account :-|

(Scroll down for map and dashcam video.)

I used to get it all the time people (often druggies) wanting a fixed fare when it's a wait and return or going all over the place. I always said no because you know it'll make the job unprofitable but punters seem to expect to get more than they're entitled

hope they catch the nasty little *hi^ s

Soon, Uber also plans to introduce multi-stop fees for time spent at on-trip stops.

I saw a video on youtube this week a channel called "black belt barrister" and he was highlighting the fact that police are refusing to investigate stolen cars and property even when they have tracking fitted and the place the thieves took it to is known !
