Police have released an image of a man they want to speak to after a taxi driver was attacked with a knife.

The male driver was said to be left with serious facial injuries following the 'vicious' assault in Bury town centre at around 4.15am today (Saturday, 8 January).

The taxi driver then tried to escape but was chased by the knifeman following the attack outside Natwest bank on The Rock.

Greater Manchester Police are urging anyone who recognises the male pictured to get in touch, as they would like to speak to him in connection with the incident.

"We want to speak to him following about an assault which has left a taxi driver with serious facial injuries at around 4.15am today after he was attacked with a knife.

"Call 0161 856 8172 or report it online at https://crowd.in/8hdErk.

Councillor for Redvales, Tamoor Tariq said in a statement on Twitter that the driver concerned "will be in everyone’s thoughts and prayers at this difficult time."

"It's horrifying to hear a Bury taxi driver was viciously attacked in the early hours of the morning in Bury Town Centre," he said.

"It is understood the driver has serious injuries, this is totally unacceptable and the perpetrators should feel the full force of the law.

"Taxi driver safety is a key and important issue, and steps have been taken in recent weeks to include this as part of our community safety plan which is currently being worked on.

"We are reaching out to GMP and Key Partners to address the issues that come to light from this issue."

He later added: Next week we will facilitate an urgent 'Taxi Driver Safety Summit' to review the incident today, and also to look at the importance of this issue generally and what more we can do to protect the trade.

"It will include representatives from GMP and Bury Council."

No arrests are believed to have been made in connection with the assault

Enquiries are said to be ongoing.

Good turnout for this protest, but article gives the impression of consisting of lots of fine words that in reality won't make any difference.

Good photos, though 8-[

Hundreds of taxi drivers gather in Bury town centre calling for action after fellow driver is attacked

TAXI drivers staged a 100 strong gathering to demand action to improve their safety after a driver was left with serious facial injuries in a brutal knife attack.

Taxi drivers left their vehicles to gather in the town centre on Saturday – one of their busiest days – in solidarity with the driver and to call for more action to safeguard drivers.

Detectives say that at around 4.15am on Saturday, an armed man threatened a taxi driver outside Natwest bank on The Rock before attacking him with a knife.

Now there is talk of strike action if more is not done to keep taxi drivers safe.

Raja Naveed, Vice-Chairman of the Bury Private Hire Drivers' Association said the driver had been left with "life-changing injuries".

Taxi drivers gathered on Cecil Street car park in 'solidarity' with the victim to say prayers for his 'speedy recovery'.

Mr Naveed said: "Right now drivers are scared out of their minds and rightfully so, because this could happen to any one of them at any time.

"So many drivers don't want to go out and have told me they will go on strike if nothing is done by the police.

"Not only that, but I imagine a lot of people don't want to take taxis at the moment, because this is as much a threat to the public as it is to us, as long as the individual who did this is still at large.

"This person is still out there with a weapon because the police can't identify him.

"I want drivers and their families to feel safe and to know that there is someone out there looking out for them.

"We don't want any trouble and don't want to antagonise the police, we are working with them and are in constant contact with them and will do everything we can to help them do their job."

Mr Naveed added: "I have spoken to the victim and he has had life-changing injuries, a young man who has been literally scared for life.

"The whole driving community is behind them and we will stand shoulder to shoulder with them and will stand together whenever this happens to one of our own.

"We will work with police very closely to get to the bottom of this."

Bury North MP, James Daly and Bury councillors, Tamoor Tariq, Nicholas Jones, Jack Rydeheard and Khalid Hussain also attended the gathering.

Mr Daly said: "We are going to address the concerns of our drivers and I want to assure them and any other members of the public who have been affected by this that the police are doing all they can to address the perpetrator.

"I know they are following every line of inquiry and are taking steps to ensure their safety.

"We're working with drivers who have suggested several more ideas as to what needs to be done."

He said that the council is working with drivers to improve safety and deter would-be attackers.

"My deepest sympathies go out to the victim and all the drivers of the borough who have every right to go about their work safely."

Below is the third photo published by GMP, which the newspaper didn't use. But looks like two of the three images were captured on the night of the attack, because looks like it's the same gear he's wearing as in the grabs at the top of the thread.

But the other photo today looks like it may be a police mugshot, which is maybe why he's been recognised from the not particularly clear CCTV images of the attack.

But no sign of any history via a quick Google search, although you assume people like him will have been in big trouble before.

Or maybe he's one of those types who bully and bludgeon their way through life and always seem to get away with it. Until now, maybe [-(

Nothing particularly surprising here, but at least there's one slightly new angle...
