I tend to be a bit cynical about stuff like this, but rather than try to pick holes in it, just assuming it's legit =D>

Don't know if it's worthy of a piece on the Echo's website, though :-s

Taxi driver knocks money off after surprise find on back seat

Mark Fairclough took a cab on Saturday night

A man was blown away by the actions of a taxi driver after taking a cab on Saturday night.

Mark Fairclough and his wife Lyndsey say they ordered a taxi on the evening of February 5 to take them from Rainford Labour Club, to Billinge, then onto St Helens town.

Upon entering the taxi, Lyndsey discovered a purse in the back seat belonging to a previous passenger.

Mark, 59, told the ECHO : "My wife and her mate were in the backseat and they found a purse, they mentioned it to the driver.

"When he [the driver] looked at it, he recognised it as belonging to a passenger who he'd just dropped off in Rainford, so I told him he'd have to drop it off at his office and wait for the passenger to get back in touch."

However, the driver's kind actions after this are what left Mark astounded.

Mark said: "It was an old lady who was in the car before you and he said he don't want her at home worrying about where her purse is.

"He said 'if I can turn the car around now and go back to my last customer, knock you a couple of quid off your fare, I'll feel better'.

"He was a cracking fella, his honesty was really good. He could've easily just dropped it back at his office."

Mark then took to Facebook to commend the actions of the driver in a local community group.

He added: "I put the post on People of St Helens because there's always a lot of bad press with taxi drivers but he was spot on."

Loaded up the other week with a young couple, who are regulars at the rank.

Just about to leave, heard knock on back window. Thought for a second there was going to be some sort of kick off, but turns out it was another driver, who saw the couple and fished out a mobile phone that he'd had in his cab since it was left there by the guy a week or two earlier :-o

They thought he was a hero for returning it, but if it had been me who'd lost it I wouldn't have been happy, because I know the rules [-(

I mean, obviously they got it back, but they might have bought a replacement in the meantime, and it was a reasonably pricey phone, maybe £200/300 worth :-o
