Post subject:  Driver NOT arrested as teen dies after Barnet cab collision

This is the official Met news release.

Don't want to sound too trade-oriented when it's about this sort of stuff, but the Met seem to be emphasising that the taxi driver hasn't been arrested, and this has been parroted by several different news outlets, hence my thread title.

But joyriders, by the sounds of it, or the deceased's pals preferred not to hang around and look after him until the emergency services arrived, for whatever reason :-|

Appeal after teenage boy dies in Barnet collision

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage after a teenage boy died in a collision in Barnet.

Police were called at 22:54hrs on Saturday, 26 February to reports of a collision involving a car in Frith Lane, NW7.

Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service. A 17-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the car, was found injured. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, he died at the scene.

His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Witnesses reported seeing several people leaving the area following the collision.

Three people were later arrested and remain in custody.

Initial enquiries suggest the car had been involved in a minor collision with a taxi before colliding with a tree. The driver of the taxi stopped at the scene. He was not arrested and is helping with our enquiries.

Detectives from the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are working to establish what happened and would like to hear from any witnesses.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage is asked to call 0208 991 9555. Alternatively, call 101 quoting CAD 7787/26Feb or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Interesting the neutral wording used here by the Met - 'people leaving the area'.

All other outlets, including ITV News, MailOnline, Evening Standard and Metro using the more loaded phrase 'flee the scene', which obviously sounds more like they've something to hide, and possibly a joyriding scenario :?

the trouble is at that age they don't understand that speed means less time to react

yesterday morning I had dropped off in a local village and was about to pull out onto the main road when a car came round the bend doing about 70 to 80 in a 30mph zone he then overtook a learner driver doing 25 to 30 narrowly avoiding knocking 2 cyclists off their bikes coming the other way he got away with it but it could have been so much worse
