Uber driver gets stuck down steep country track after taking wrong turn

A driver ended up stuck fast and 'in shock' after taking a track that got steadily rougher and steeper.

The Mercedes van driver got stuck on Hey Flake Lane at Delph, a Pennine village in the former West Riding, about five miles from Marsden, on Saturday night.

Photographer Craig Hannah, who captured the poor driver's predicament on Monday morning, said it wasn't clear exactly why the Uber driver had gone down such a rough and 'very steep' track.

Craig spoke to the driver, from Manchester, who had been working in the area late on Saturday night and may have been trying to return to base.

Craig believes the driver had been told, possibly by a passenger, that it was possible to descend the track, despite a sign warning that it was unsuitable for vehicles.

"A passenger he was picking up or dropping off said he could drive down the lane.

"If you were local you'd know it isn't really passable in a 4x4 these days."

He said the driver was "in shock" after the incident and was trying to arrange for the van to be recovered.

"He got wedged about halfway down. He couldn't reverse so he carried going.

"He could not get his door open. The police were in attendance.

"It was a nightmare by all accounts."

Craig says the track leads to a hamlet called Grange and Paradise Farm.

"It is a seven-seater people carrier. The back bumper is off. The only way to retrieve it will be to drag it back up the hill.

"The driver is a really nice guy who has lost two days of his livelihood."
