Hiring drivers, not taxis, I mean

Think there's also a vacancy for a sub-editor at YorkMix, at least judging by the half dozen or so obvious typos

To be fair, they're probably mostly the PHA's errors, but you would think the journalists would correct them

Anyway, this is the usual driver shortage stuff and recruitment advertorial, but for a change she's doing it on behalf of the whole trade. And for both sides :-o

Covid leaves shortage of taxi drivers in York – Firms are now hiring

https://yorkmix.com/covid-leaves-shorta ... ow-hiring/

It was one of the trades that was badly hit by lockdown with customers almost vanishing into thin air last year.

But now there’s been a big increase in the number of people in York looking for a cab and the trade is now trying find more drivers

Wendy Loveday, the chair of the Private Hire Association, has told YorkMix that they need to replace the drivers who gave up r retired early during the covid lockdown.

Wendy says: “Demand has risen significantly. There are vacant positions at private hire firms and on the taxi ranks.

“York is the number one city to visit in the UK and we can see that in the amount of people looking for a ride.

“There is a massive opportunities and potential for people to eargood money. Just get yourselves to the York taxi licencing office get a badge, and work for us.”

Wendy added: “A lot of the drivers left the trade during lockdown because obviously nobody was travelling anywhere. So nobody was making any money. So they went off and did other jobs like delivery drivers roles.

“A lot of them haven’t come back and it’s really difficult to get hold of new drivers.

“It’s great fun. It’s really good living and people can can run a house on it. You can bring a family upon it. You know, this isn’t pin money. It’s a wage. It’s a really good wage.”

Yes, just get yourself down to the nearest rank for an interview.

Actually, self-employed people don't do interviews, and neither are there 'vacant positions'. That sounds more like paid employment.

Yes, it's a laugh a minute

As for what you can do with the bundles of cash you'll be making, I'm saying nothing. And, again, self-employed people don't earn a 'wage' [-(

Note this is an official City of York Council news release [-(

Recruitment campaign for more taxi drivers to support safe travel

https://www.york.gov.uk/news/article/94 ... afe-travel

The council has secured Government funding to help prevent violence against women and girls and to recruit more licensed taxi drivers for the city.

The funding includes £200 worth of free training each for the first 50 applicants before 31 March.

The funding has been made available to ensure enough licensed taxi services are available in the city. This comes as numbers of drivers have dropped during the pandemic and concerns have been raised about safe travel being available for those who need it.

The council is therefore supporting York’s taxi trade by urging more people to consider the flexibility that driving offers in terms of working hours and earning potential and become a driver.

A condition for the funding is that the free training and follow up test on local knowledge must be booked before this financial year’s end on 31 March. Applicants who can do this will also have the fee for the required Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check paid by the council if it’s completed before 31 March too.

Whether driving self-employed in a Hackney cab or working for one of York’s licensed private hire operators, the requirements are a valid car driver’s licence with no more than seven points on it, no history of serious offending and a desire to help people travel safely. Drivers can license their own vehicle or they can contact local operators to see what help is available to drive one of their vehicles.

Cllr Andy D’Agorne, Executive Member for Transport, said: "York’s licensed taxi drivers make an important contribution to the city by supporting people to make safe travel choices.

"The job offers many benefits including flexibility and considerable earning potential. So if you are a great driver, want to work the hours you choose, be your own boss and make good money, please get in touch!

“Among the £200 worth of free training we offered ahead of the Government’s deadline of 31 March, are incentives including grants of up to £3,000 to buy hybrid taxis and funding to support running costs of fully electric taxis.”

Anyone interested in applying should contact the council who will get back in touch with more information on being a taxi driver, details of the training and contact details of all York’s taxi companies. Please visit the councils website, email: wdu@york.gov.uk or telephone: 01904 553017 and leave a message.

Seven points? The way they put it here makes it sound a bit different from the norm with regard to councils and their 'safety is paramount' kind of stuff.

And I wonder if they've considered the legalities re self-employment etc?

That money would be far better spent on taxi marshalls.
