Reading taxi driver ordered to pay over £1,000 after 'plying for hire' in town

https://www.getreading.co.uk/news/readi ... y-23416801

A cabbie will have to pay over £1,000 in court fees after being caught plying for hire in Reading. Under current borough council licensing rules, only registered Hackney carriages can pick up in the town.

But Omer Malik - who was registered for Hackney carriage journeys and private hire in South Oxfordshire - agreed to take a £6 fare from a Reading Borough Council officer.

Malik, of Lamerton Road in Whitley, appeared before Reading Magistrates' Court on Friday where he was found guilty of illegally plying for hire and operating without insurance on 8 March 2019. He was fined £100, ordered to pay £1,000 in operating costs, and a £30 victim surcharge.

Councillor Tony Page, the Reading Borough Council's lead for Strategic Environment, Planning and Transport, said: "This is another great result from the council’s licensing team, who work hard to ensure regulations are in force to protect the travelling public.

“If a licensed private hire operator picks up a customer without a prior and formal booking they are not insured for the journey, and are acting illegally.”
