Thugs launch vicious attack on taxi driver leaving him seriously injured in hospital

Two thugs launched a vicious attack on a taxi driver leaving him in a serious condition in hospital. The suspects assaulted the driver, aged in his 60s, and tried to steal his taxi in the terrifying robbery on Cleveland Road in north Manchester. They also stole his phone.

The victim was taken to hospital from the scene. He remains there with severe head injuries.

His condition is described as serious, but not life-threatening, police said. Two 17-year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and remain in custody for questioning.

Detectives are now appealing for anyone with information about the attack - which happened at around 12.50am on Monday (March 14) - to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Jon Barnett, of GMP's City of Manchester division, said: "This was a vicious assault which could have had devastating consequences. We wish the victim well as he continues to receive treatment in hospital.

"GMP is absolutely committed to keeping people safe and a thorough investigation is underway to identify those responsible for this assault and robbery so that we can bring them to face justice.

"While we have arrested two suspects, I still appeal to anyone with information to contact us. Though it was the middle of the night, we know there was shouting so local residents may have looked out of their windows and seen something which could assist us."
