I've just had an email from the DVSA publishing their latest enforcement figures for the last year or so. What is worrying is the very high percentage of taxis pulled by DVSA enforcement offices and being isued with immediate prohibitions for mechanical defects, in one quarter 68% of those inspected got immediate prohibitions. The rate for buses and coaches was under the 10% mark in every quarter. Light vans had similar failure rates as taxis. https://www.gov.uk/government/statistic ... at-britain |

Our local LOs were out at the weekend but thankfully the only issue they had was one bald tyre. So hopefully things are getting better. |

Our LO has even put the "bald" tyre thing in our penalty point system despite me asking them to correctly state it as a tyre below the legal limit for the last 4 years. I wonder how it would stand up in court if the evidence presented to you said it was a bald tyre and the defendant produced evidence that the tyre was not in fact bald but had tread on it? |

The courts prefer the term 'defective'. But I'm more a bald kind of guy. |

"Below the legal limit" is probably the correct term for a seriously worn tyre. The figures in the attached article go back over the last couple of years, and year on year "taxis" come at the top of the list for illegal tyres. It used to be light vans. New tyres aren't that expensive surely? |
