Silvertown Taxis claim customers have been getting into taxis of another company claiming to work for the firm

A Cheshire taxi company is claiming that rogue drivers are acting as employees for the firm and charging more expensive fares. Silvertown Taxis, based on Wood Street in Macclesfield, posted on social media about the 'serious issue' facing their customers.

They claim that customers have been getting into taxis of another company claiming to be working for Silvertown. The taxi company also said they have received complains over 'nasty surprises' of the fares they were charged.

Silvertown Taxis took to social media to warn customers that travelling in a taxi that isn't pre-booked means they are not covered by insurance. They also said it is illegal for taxi companies to pick-up fares that are not pre-booked.

The full post reads: "We would like to draw your attention to a serious issue facing many of our customers, especially during busy times.

"Many of our customers have recently booked a taxi with us and have mistakenly got into the taxis of another company after been told by the driver that they are working on behalf of Silvertown Taxis.

"Silvertown Taxis understand this is happening regularly and we have had many complaints about this issue from customers, especially over the weekend. These customers have in most cases had a nasty surprise as the price of their journey increases dramatically (Silvertown Taxis work on fixed fares whilst other companies use a Meter, making the same journey substantially more expensive).

"Not only is it illegal for taxi companies to pick-up fares that are not pre-booked, you will also be travelling with no insurance as well as paying substantially more. Just make sure when you book a taxi that it is a Silvertown Taxi, otherwise the consequences could be severe."

Only one comment on the website, and it's quite an astute one, and obviously someone who knows what they're talking about.

Quote:
Someone needs to go and read the rules on hackney carriages and private hire vehicles on the council website. Only hackney carriages are allowed to use the word "taxi" on the vehicle, and these run at council set metered rates on trips within the council area.

Real "taxis" are allowed to ply for hire in the street without prebooking, in the old Macclesfield Council area it should have a taxi sign plus a Cheshire East licence plate with gold triangle to ply for hire and take people who haven't booked.

Private hire (including Uber) are not taxis and cannot ply for hire on the street. Fixed rate fares imply private hire, which have to be booked in advance.

So what exactly is going on here? Are these mysterious cars out-of-area taxis working illegally and for some reason using their meters? Or are the punters simply getting into legal taxis by mistake?

Only problem is that the photo above shows the word 'taxi' on the car :?
