Pensioner fined after racially abusing taxi driver outside Wallsend pub

Kenneth Rouse, 73, turned aggressive and banged on the victim's window after refusing to pay for 'waiting time'

A disgruntled pensioner has been fined after racially abusing a taxi driver outside a North Tyneside pub.

Kenneth Rouse had ordered the cab to take him home from the Anson, in Wallsend, but immediately told the driver he would not be paying him for the time he'd waited outside. The 73-year-old then turned aggressive and began banging on the passenger window, a court was told.

As a result, the cabbie refused to give Rouse a lift, which caused him to become more agitated and call the driver a racist name prosecutors said. When challenged by the victim, Rouse initially claimed he'd misheard him before eventually apologising.

However, the incident was reported to the police and the pensioner, of Welwyn Close, in Wallsend, was summonsed to North Tyneside Magistrates' Court to face a racially-aggravated public order offence, which he admitted.

Prosecutor, Glenda Beck, said the cabbie pulled up outside the Ansen on October 4 last year after being ordered to take Rouse home. He waited in an old bus stop until Rouse emerged from the pub. Mrs Beck added: "The defendant approached the car and said "I'm not paying for you for waiting time". The defendant walked around the car and banged on the front passenger window.

"The complainant said "I'm not taking you" and the defendant told him to f*** off and called him a black c***. The defendant began walking away and the complainant got out to ask why he was racist. The defendant said he had misheard him."

The court heard that a female witness, who'd heard Rouse's racial slur, also challenged him about his racist language. Rouse did eventually apologise but the victim reported the incident to his boss and the police. In a statement, he said: "This incident has affected me as it occurred in a public place and while I was working. It made me feel very angry, stressed and embarrassed."

John Kirkham, defending, said Rouse, who has not been before a court since 2017, had already apologised for his behaviour and was remorseful. He added: "Mr Rouse is undergoing a lot of medical investigations. There are concerns about hearing loss and memory loss."

Rouse as fined £180 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

At which time the Sussex mobile would have been long gone, leaving the old f***er to walk home.

For those good folks not often in court, the CPS and defence lawyers actually have to say those words out in their full glory. :D
