Taxi Driver Online :: View topic - Taxi Drivers not helpful

I have been told by the licensing enforcement officer in Dudley that when you hire a taxi, part of the service you are paying for is for the driver to assist the passenger by getting out and helping, if only by opening the door.

Well any decent driver would help in this way, but I didn't realise it was in the rules.

When dark & money is changing hands, suitable lighting must be switched on

Or was it in the rules at all? Perhaps the lady misinterpreted what she was told.

I think most areas say that drivers have to give reasonable assistance with luggage or suchlike, but that could easily me misinterpreted.

Ie the drivers sit on their fat backside while grandma struggles with her luggage, while able bodied people think that the driver should act as a gopher.

There is a court case which touched on this subject, If I remember rightly it was an elderly woman with baggage or luggage and the Taxi driver didn't help her, the judge said the taxi driver had a duty to assist the lady with her baggage.

I dont mind helping anyone, but when mrs Marks & Spencer twaddles off to put the kettle on and leaves soft lad here to carry the bags, they get left on the pavement!
Heck ive changed lightbulbs before now, and even a syphen on a toilet for one old lady, but i wont have the pi$$ taken!

most of the customers off the rank. especially the station are never to be seen again.:

Interesting. But did the judge say that the public have a duty to help taxi drivers with their 'baggage'?

Reminds me of one job that my circuit had when I first started in the trade - this woman who got picked up at a local supermarket with at least a dozen bags to go less than a mile up the road. Of course, she wouldn't lift a finger, and the driver probably spent longer loading/unloading the bags than on the actual trip. IIRC the fare was less than £2. Tip? Forget it That's one of the reasons I now work the ranks, and thank the Good Lord that I have a taxi plate that enables me to do so

I would say that 75% of my punters use our firm every week, and I can't remember any of them expecting drivers to carry the shopping miles for nothing. Bless them.
