Nothing much here to see at all, but can't recall any spot-checks finding drivers with illegally dark tints, although it is of course a big issue in some areas more generally :?

Taxi drivers issued warnings in operations by Peterborough City Council

Licensing Officers from Peterborough City Council have been involved in a joint operation with officers from Cambridgeshire Police, HMRC and DVSA to inspect taxis operating in Peterborough.

On September 8, vehicles were stopped by Cambridgeshire Police and inspected at Pleasure Fair Meadow car park, Oundle Road. The taxis were checked for potential safety risks, whilst drivers were checked to ensure their licences were compliant.

In total, 39 taxis and private hire vehicles were stopped, with four being issued with immediate prohibition notices by the DVSA due to being in an unroadworthy condition and were removed from the road. A further ten vehicles were issued with warnings and suitable advice. Notable defects identified in the operation included dangerously worn tyres, non-functioning lights and tinted windows being darker than lawfully permitted.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communications, Culture and Communities, Councillor Steve Allen, said: “The importance of this joint operation in cracking down on unroadworthy taxis and private hire vehicles cannot be understated. Peterborough’s taxi and private car hire services are used by thousands every day, we must ensure that these vehicles are safe.

“I’d like to thank all parties for their hard work and dedication in finding those taxi drivers whose standards had fallen well below those expected by this authority. I hope these checks help residents to feel safe and we will continue to work alongside the Police, DVSA and HMRC."

So how were these cars with the illegal tints plated in the first place?

Presumably it's about windows retro-fitted after the car has been tested and plated. Sounds more like a boy racer kind of thing than anything a driver in the trade might do. I mean, why fit over-tinted glass knowing it won't pass the next compliance test?

Only thing I can think of is that a driver might fit illegal tints between tests unaware that they're illegal. Sounds pretty unlikely, but there's always one :-o

most likely the dvsa or police "standard" is different from the testing stations

But the council's standard can't be *less* stringent than the police and DVSA's...

And, if it did have illegal glass, how did it pass an MoT?

Either the council and MoT testers have passed illegal glass, or in the interim a driver has fitted it unaware it's illegal. (Or those conducting the spot-check have got it wrong.)

Or maybe the driver has fitted some kind of tint (presumably a short-term, easily applied thing) intending to remove it for MoTs and council testing. But he's been caught out by the spot-check :-o

By mechanics who don't consider it a safety issue, and ignored by licensing officials who couldn't care less.
