This is the official Notts police press release, and is potentially confusing. Or confusing for most of us, because it's one of those that uses the word 'rank', when most of us would understand it as an office, or whatever. But the headline would certainly suggest to me a hackney rank on the street rather than a despatch office, whether HC or PH, or both.

Appeal after man assaulted at taxi rank

https://news.nottinghamshire.police.uk/ ... ank-455966

Detectives investigating an assault at a taxi rank have released an image of a man they would like to speak to.

Officers were called to DG Cars in Lower Parliament Street, Nottingham City Centre, following reports a man had been attacked.

The man sustained significant head injuries after he was reportedly assaulted while trying to break up a dispute at around 6.30am on 25 September 2022.

Officers investigating the incident would now like to speak to the man pictured as they believe he could assist them with their inquiries.

Detective Constable Chris Adams, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a horrible assault that left the victim unconscious and caused him significant head injuries.

“We would like to identify the man in this image as we believe he may have vital information that could help with our inquiries.

“With this in mind, we would ask anyone who recognises him to please get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with any information or who recognises the man pictured is asked to call 101, quoting incident 319 of 25 September 2022, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Of course, that's what immediately casts doubt on the 'taxi rank' thing - if you don't know Nottingham, and you didn't know that DG Cars is a private hire operation, then the headline and text would suggest to most of us that it happened at an HC rank.

And this is the DG office location on StreetView. Unfortunately there's a bit of a glitch here, so it's not easy to move around the area and get a good view.

But I can't see any sign of a hackney rank in the vicinity:

That's quite a good picture of the fella.

Hopefully someone will give the police his details.

I must have driven past there more than a dozen times and not realised that's the location of DG cars

It's certainly not a very 'taxi' looking office of the normal type, and unless you knew the DG brand or had time to closely inspect the place, you'd never know it's a despatch office.

Maybe that's why they call it a rank

You can just about see the website address on the signage that says DG Cars, but apart from that and the phone number, it could be anything to a passing stranger :?

Another police appeal that seems to use the word 'rank' when it actually means 'office'. But this time, it's the BBC's rehash that causes the confusion:

Gloucester Police hunt man who punched woman and girl at taxi rank

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-g ... e-64026492

A woman was knocked unconscious and a teenage girl assaulted at a taxi rank in the early hours of the morning.

The incident occurred at about 04:45 GMT on Saturday near A Star Taxis on Eastgate Street in Gloucester.

Police, who are appealing for witnesses, said a man in a balaclava punched the woman, in her 20s, causing her to lose consciousness.

He also punched the teenager before fleeing the scene via Wellington Street towards Gloucester Park.

As well as the balaclava, the suspect was wearing a black hooded top, trainers and jeans, police said.

The woman suffered a cut to her head in the attack, and both victims were taken to hospital to be checked over.

Both were assisted by members of the public, police said.

Anyone who witnessed the attack is asked to contact Gloucestershire Police.

Of course, when it says the incident happened 'near A Star Taxis' then that kind of rings alarm bells, although the 'rank' may have been near an office (presumably private hire).

However, read the Glocs Police press release and it doesn't use the word rank at all:

Witness appeal after man punched woman and teenage girl in Gloucester

https://www.gloucestershire.police.uk/n ... loucester/

Officers are appealing for information after a man assaulted two people in Gloucester on Saturday morning (17 December).

The incident happened around 4.45am near to A Star Taxi's on Eastgate Street.

A man punched one of the victims, a woman aged in her 20s, in the face and she fell to the floor. This resulted in a cut to her head and she lost consciousness.

The other victim, a teenage girl, was also punched and members of the public assisted at the scene.

Officers attended and the victims were taken to hospital to be checked over.

The man, who was described as being in his early 20s, ran off down Wellington Street, towards Gloucester Park. He was wearing a black hooded top, trainers, jeans and a balaclava.

Anyone who witnessed what took place, and has not already provided their details to officers, is asked to contact police online by completing the following form and quoting incident 79 of 17 December: https://www.gloucestershire.police.uk/c ... -reported/

So the BBC specifically says it happened 'at a taxi rank', while Glocs Police simply says it happened near to an office. And the BBC's headline and strapline makes it sound like it's related to the 'taxi rank' in some way, while Glocs Police seem to use the office as no more than a geographical locator, and nothing to suggest it was related to the office.

And certainly no sign of a 'rank' on the StreetView of the office here (this is the address currently used by A Star Taxis, although the StreetView here is a couple of years old and thus it looks like the office has had a rebrand):

North Yorkshire Police using the correct terminology here - other sources might have described an altercation at a Scarborough taxi rank [-(
