Video on the website, which on the one hand doesn't show much, but on the other is reasonably dramatic. Make sure sound is turned on.

And sounds and reads like it wouldn't have happened if he hadn't pulled over to ask the perps what they were up to. Bet he regrets that now, but hindsight is a wonderful thing...

'Mindless idiots' heard screaming before smashing taxi window in frightening video footage

Taxi company owner Alan Knowles says the attack has come during an influx of anti-social behaviour.

Video footage captures the shocking moment vandals smashed in the rear window of a taxi after a driver pulled over in Lancaster.

The yobs, dressed in dark clothing, destroyed the window in one fell swoop before running away from the scene. The incident happened shortly before midnight on Wednesday, November 2, on Cable Street, near The Bobbin pub.

Alan Knowles, owner of AK Travel based, says his taxi was among several damaged in the area. Talking to LancsLive, Alan said: "There was a car that was trying to avoid the group, as they kicked all windows in sight.

"They then started kicking a taxi that was parked opposite the road, so I pulled over to ask what was going on. It's like a holding road for taxis at that time of night, so no other vehicles were there."

Alan said he thinks it was a group of young males who carried out the attack on his back window. However, he was not able to identify them as they ran off before Alan could see.

The attack has put him and other drivers off the road until repairs can be carried out. He said: "It's affected all of us, we can't put the car out until tomorrow now, so it's off for the whole day and night.

"It'll cost £100 through our insurance, but I had it independently checked and it could have been £600. It affects everything, my business and the drivers that can't go out to earn money."

However, as a taxi driver in the area and well-versed in the goings-on in Lancaster at nighttime, Alan says the attack has come during an influx of anti-social behaviour.

He added: "It's got worse since lockdown and the pubs reopened, people think they can just do what they want. There's also been a taxi driver shortage since then, with a lot who didn't come back to the job.

"I think these things are a real mix of all the factors, it's mindless idiots who have been drinking and we get the brunt of it all."

A spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary said: "We were called at 11.58pm (November 2) to reports of criminal damage in Cable Street, Lancaster. The back windscreen of a taxi had been smashed. Enquiries are continuing. Any information, please contact 101, quoting log 1443 of November 2."

Don't think the word 'influx' is incorrect here, but it's not the way it's normally used, which seems to be more about people or other living things like insects, say. Or cross-Channel migrants

How many drivers are using the same car, and there are no alternatives? :?

So he wants even more drivers in his motor? :-o

But at least that means there are less drivers out of work because of the incident than there would have been before the driver shortage
