Post subject:  N Northants Council steers festive revellers to pre-booking

So the festive season is near, and it's time for the usual council advice on 'staying safe' in 'taxis', and obviously the time to pick holes in their advice re HCs, PHVs, plates, terminology etc.

But this one's very odd. Don't think I've ever read one like this, which completely and utterly ignores the HC/PH distinction, and instead just uses the generic term 'taxi' :-o

And it completely ignores the possibility of street hires, but instead gives the impression it's trying to discourage use of on street HCs, and encourage pre-booking :?

Which seems very odd, so I had a look at the DfT statistics to see if maybe they had very few or zero HCs. Then the penny dropped - North Northants is the council with Corby in it, and the one with all the stuff about strife and strikes associated with the fare amalgamation stuff

So I smell a bit of a rat about all this [-(

Stay safe when you’re out celebrating this Christmas

Ahead of the start of the Christmas party season, residents across North Northamptonshire are being asked to remember some golden rules when planning a trip or night out.

If you are arranging an evening out this Christmas, make sure that you plan well in advance how you are getting home by using licensed taxis.

All taxis that are registered with the local council must display a licence plate (usually on the front and rear of the vehicle) which has a number, along with a smaller licence in the front windscreen. Always check this before getting in a taxi to make sure that your driver has followed the correct and legal processes.

"Due to the pandemic, the traditional Christmas parties haven’t been able to go ahead for the past few years. But we know this year many people will be planning day trips and evenings out and may require a taxi home, which is why we are taking this opportunity to remind residents to be careful and only use licensed taxis.

Wherever possible, pre-book a taxi and ask the driver for the name of the booking before you get in. And always keep the number of a reliable firm with you so you don’t get caught out."
Cllr David Brackenbury, North Northamptonshire Council’s Executive Member for Growth and Regeneration (which covers taxi licensing)

"I would encourage all residents to think ahead and follow the golden rules when using taxis this Christmas, which include planning how you are going to get home and keeping the number of a reliable firm with you."
Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of the Council

Here are a few golden rules when using taxis this Christmas:

    • Plan how you’re going to get home from your night out – arrange a lift or book a taxi in your name. And leave the taxi booking details with a friend

    • Always keep the number of a reliable firm with you

    • When you make a booking, ask if you can pay by card. It is worth agreeing the fare in advance, so you can make sure you have the correct cash to pay if necessary

    • Avoid taxis that tout for business and are unlicensed

    • When the taxi arrives, check it is the one you booked by asking for the name in which it was booked. If in doubt, don’t get in

    • Always sit behind the driver in the back seat

    • If you feel uneasy, ask to be let out

    • Stick with your friends and choose a meeting point for if you get separated

    • Never accept a lift from a stranger.

Suppose you want to pay by cash? :-s

Oh, I see #-o

I think many people will construe that as advice to avoid taxis plying for hire, at least in the absence of any advice on public hire in the rest of the notice [-X

Probably more of a problem than touting HC and PHV drivers is the latter plying for hire, but oddly the council doesn't see fit to mention that

Well if it's unlicensed it's not a taxi :-s

Many businesses are suffering from high energy bills and inflation I doubt there will be many Xmas parties it is a thing of the past in fact I have a feeling this might be a rubbish December this year because there's a lot of people out there can't afford to eat or heat so they certainly aren't going to partying !

Corby especially is a poor town

Another piece of often repeated nonsense. :-k

What happens if there is more than one punter?

Yes, decided not to comment on the back seat thing, because I've mentioned it several times before.

But, I mean, it's presumably aimed particularly at sole women sitting in the rear, and while I'm sure it's happened once or twice, if anyone on the back seat moves across to sit behind me then it would make me feel a bit wary :-o

In reality, the vast majority of lone people who get in the back will board on the nearside, where the pavement obviously is, and they'll stay there rather than move across the back seat.

Of course, occasionally a lone person will get into the driver's side, for whatever reason, but that's obviously a different dynamic as regards sitting directly behind the driver - they're not shuffling across the back seat to sit behind you.

But maybe the official advice is just badly worded:

Maybe 'behind the driver' is just intended for emphasis, and it simply means to sit in the back seat rather than directly behind the driver :-k
