Taxi driver sacked after 'groping' girl, 15, in cab

Staffordshire Police are investigating the 'sexual assault' on the A34 in Newcastle-under-Lyme

A taxi driver has been sacked after allegedly groping a teenage girl in his cab. Roseville has apologised to the family of the 15-year-old following the reported incident.

It has been reported to Staffordshire Police which has launched an investigation. The girl had been picked up in Talke Pits and was on the way to her North Staffordshire home.

It is alleged that the driver asked to touch the girl's breasts before then turning around and putting his hand on her leg. Her mum says the girl then asked to be dropped off and ran home.

The mum said: "She was sitting behind the driver. She said he was fine at first and he was quite nice. He was looking at her in the wing mirror. All of a sudden he turned. She was getting really scared.

"She was as white as a ghost when she arrived home. I said 'What on earth happened?' and she just broke. She's quite strong-willed - nothing really affects her much. She was sobbing.

"She thought he was going to do something to her. They were in such close proximity to each other.

"She just grabbed on to me for dear life. I was gutted that she had to go through that.

"She is only 15 but it doesn't matter how old she is - no-one should have to go through that. The police came out and they were brilliant."

The driver's account of the alleged incident is not known.

Newcastle-based Roseville has been operating for more than 50 years. It is one of Staffordshire's largest taxi firms.

A Roseville spokesman said: "We have dismissed the driver and apologised to the parents. He has been dismissed instantly."

The incident was reported at 8.50pm on Sunday, November 20.

A police spokesman said: “We were called to reports that a teenage girl had been sexually assaulted in a car in Newcastle. The vehicle was a black Audi and it was reported to have taken place on the A34. An investigation is ongoing.”

Witnesses should call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

Must be some wing mirror if the driver was able to use it to look at someone in the back

Doesn't look like he's allowed to have a version of events :-o

Who's likely to have witnessed this in any way, shape or form?

Call me cynical about this kind of thing, but it's hardly unknown for a taxi passenger to misrepresent what the driver has said or done, even if it's a 15-year-old girl, and it's an accusation of some gravity like this.

But the optics dictate that the driver is dumped immediately, irrespective of his version of events, assuming he's even allowed to have any say.

But hopefully the police investigation will be more balanced, ditto the licensing council :-|

On the basis of what's in the article, the driver has been harshly treated.

It would be interesting to see what the driver said to the operator, and what action if any, the police take.
