After numerous complaints were received regarding abused parking from delivery drivers and local residents on its busiest taxi rank in town, Chelmsford city council Licensing Team partnered up with Essex Police and Parking Enforcement to help spread the word that the rank should be freed up for the taxis to help the night-time economy get home safely after a night out.

After numerous enforcement measures were taken the rank was cleared and our taxis were inundated with work.

Even though it is not sustainable until the long-term problems are fixed, it felt like a win on the night.

Thanks to Essex Police and Chelmsford Parking Enforcement for their help.

Indeed, and that's the problem with a lot of stuff, not just in the nighttime economy, but with law and order more generally.

Once these things are allowed to become ingrained, it's difficult or impossible to turn things round, and one-night 'crackdowns' just won't cut it.

And it's unlikely that sufficient resources will ever be devoted to make a long-term difference, so the problem effectively becomes permanent.

But what will happen in the particular circumstances of Chelmsford, who knows? :?

Well done to the officials and police for the work they did on the night.

As has been alluded to in the article, these enforcement actions need to be the norm.

Maybe the new traffic enforcement powers, via CCTV, will help.
