Can't be bothered looking back, and the article doesn't say, but think masks still compulsory in taxis in Scotland when this happened in February 2022. Feels longer than that since I wore a mask, but it's actually just one year since the Omicron variant all kicked off, and we had a Christmas and New Year lockdown, in Scotland at least All that feels like it was a lot longer ago than one year... Pair ambushed taxi driver after being told to wear a face mask https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/news/sco ... face-mask/ A MAN and a woman ambushed a taxi driver after being told to wear a face mask. Leanne Hanlon, 37, and John Sinclair, 31, lashed out at Rana Sharif in Glasgow's Bridgeton on February 14, 2022. The city's Sheriff Court heard that the pair ordered a taxi to take them to near the scene of the incident at 8.30pm. Prosecutor Jennifer Sillars said: "They were told to wear a face mask but Hanlon refused to do so. "They continued to shout and swear at the driver 'Drive on you know how to drive'." Mr Sharif stopped the car due to concerns over Hanlon's behaviour and both were told to exit. While outside, Hanlon spat at Mr Sharif and lunged towards him as a means of intimidation. Miss Sillars said: "Hanlon kicked out at Mr Sharif and Sinclair intervened to pull her back to stop it. "Sinclair punched Mr Sharif to the left side of his head while he was attempting to get a face mask from the vehicle." Mr Sharif was able to push Sinclair away. Sinclair then struck Mr Sharif to the head with a full bottle of beer which did not break on contact but smashed to the ground. The victim pushed away Sinclair again only for him to fall on to the ground on broken glass. Hanlon meantime grabbed Mr Sharif's mobile phone and smashed the screen and the rear passenger window. The pair attempted to flee the scene before both fell on the broken glass. Both shouted and swore at Mr Sharif and were recorded by a witness on a mobile phone. Hanlon said, while mimicking Mr Sharif's accent: "You f***ing piece of s***, where are you from?" The pair were later traced and Sinclair was found to have bleeding injuries. They told officers that they had been attacked by Mr Sharif but Sinclair admitted to hitting him with a bottle. Hanlon caused a total of £1,950 in damages and Mr Sharif fortunately escaped with a bump on the head. Hanlon, of Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Sharif as well as behaving in a threatening or abusive manner. She also admitted destroying property without a reasonable excuse. Sinclair, also of Cambuslang, pled guilty to an assault to Mr Sharif's injury. Robert Sheridan, defending Hanlon, told the court on Friday that it was an "appalling incident." Stephen Grady, defending Sinclair, stated: "He accepts the gravity of the situation he puts himself in." Sheriff Vincent Lunny jailed Sinclair - who has previous convictions for assaults - including on a child - and domestic offences, for seven months. Hanlon was ordered to pay £1,950 in compensation and was tagged for nine months keeping her indoors between 7pm and 7am. The sheriff said: "You committed these appalling offences of a man just doing his job and did nothing to deserve this." |

mask wearing can be requested but can it be demanded ? I can see why they might be upset but that's no excuse for behaving like a wild animal ! Another one that maybe needs removing permanently from society |

Quote: mask wearing can be requested but can it be demanded ? Well it can be 'demanded' if it's required by law, surely, as per what I said before the article

Not sure the incident would be viewed as an ambush down here. Is that a Scottish thing?

Not what I'd call an 'ambush', which suggests some kind of planned confrontation or robbery etc. Probably just one of these slightly inaccurate words used in such articles, such as 'ploy' in the latest Worcester article about the subsidised fees for EVs ('ploy' suggests something underhand). Or the 'handfuls' of parking tickets handed out in Worcester, which sounds a bit daft
