Post subject:  Redditch spot checks found that most cars had major defects

This is based on a brief Tweet by Worcs Road Policing, and obviously the Birmingham Mail has put his own take on it all. But very poor results compared to, er, I've forgotten where it was now... #-o

And, of course, if the eight cars tested here are representative of the trade as a whole, then obviously big issues here, but I'm guessing they're not typical of the local trade, for whatever reason.

Officers said that out of eight taxis inspected, three were found to have defective tyres

This is the shocking state of tyres discovered on taxis being driven around Redditch. It follows a night of licensing checks by police and Worcestershire Regulatory Services.

Officers said that out of eight taxis inspected, three were found to have defective tyres. All drivers were reported.

One vehicle also had its licence suspended, police confirmed in a tweet. Officers also tweeted four images showing some of the tyres found during the checks.

The post by Operations Patrol Unit Worcestershire (@OPUWorcestershire), said: "Another evening of taxi licensing checks with @RegServs, this time in Redditch. 8 taxi vehicles inspected. 3 found with defective tyres (drivers reported), 1 prohibited due to condition, another vehicle's licence suspended by Taxi licencing & 2 others with minor defects. 21625."

Officers also tweeted four images showing some of the tyres found during the checks.

Anyone found driving on defective tyres runs the risk of a fine, points on their license and potentially disqualification from driving. The minimum legal tread depth for tyres in the UK is 1.6mm.

This is Gov.uk's advice to motorists: "The cords must not be visible. This applies to any type or size of wear or damage condition, examined with or without the use of a blunt probe.

"Where damage or cuts are larger than 25mm or 10% of the section width (whichever is the greater), the cords must not be detectable on examination with a blunt probe. Sections of tread must not be partially separated from the tyre. Any sidewall bulges must not be spongy or easy to depress."

This is the tweet in its original form. Not sure if there's double counting there, or does it mean seven of eight cars had issues? But at least six of the eight did, by the looks of it :?

so only 8 tested which is a VERY small sample so I am guessing they were picking vehicles that looked ropey for inspection perchance ?

I suspect many more were stopped and only the worst were inspected.

Or it was a more targeted operation.
