HEADLINE: One dead, three fight for lives in Runcorn carnage

BYLINE: MIKE HORNBY

AN HORRIFIC car crash left a man dead and four teenagers seriously ill.

Eyewitnesses described the scene on the Daresbury Expressway, Runcorn, as "carnage" after the crash between a Citroen Xsara private hire cab and a Peugeot 306.

The 43-year-old Runcorn taxi driver died instantly in the head-on crash at 9.30 last night. His passenger, a 48-year-oldWarring-ton man, suffered head and leg injuries.

Four teenagers in the Peugeot were trapped for half an hour.

The two males and two females aged between 14 and 18 were described as "poorly, but stable" in Warrington hospital

Police said the Peugeot was not stolen.

Paramedics took the taxi passenger to Warrington general hospital, where his injuries were said to be non-life threatening.

The Peugeot was being driven towards Runcorn before the head-on crash with the Citroen, which was travelling in the opposite direction, near the junction with Pitts Heath Lane.

A fire service spokesman said: "There was a dreadful scene. We used cutting equipment to remove the roof of the Peugeot 306 to enable the youngsters to get to an ambulance.

"We also had to free the taxi driver."

It had been raining in the runup the crash.

The Daresbury Expressway remained closed until 5.30am today.
