This is Brighton and Hove

June 26, 2006 Monday

LENGTH: 93 words

HEADLINE: Letter: Special fares

The Argus

I am 92 and horrified at the escalating cost of taxi fares, adding to Brighton and Hove's expensive reputation.

Before the Second World War, it cost a shilling (about 2.5 new pence) for a journey which now costs about £12.

I notice that most of the Brighton and Hove taxis seem to have personalised or special number plates. I wonder why?

It's easy to work out, isn't it. In the past, only the rich had these. Taxi fares in central London are now cheaper, it seems. Why? Possibly because they do not have so many "special" number plates.

I think this old dear lives in a nice area, so I have a deal for her.

If she sells me her house at the pre WW11 price, then I will be more than happy to give her pre WW11 cab fares.

Because you can get one for a fraction of the price of a hackney plate? :-k

Given that for a few years London and Brighton fares have been very similar in the PHM league tables then she has a point, particularly when the Brighton trade can use cheap cars like the 50mpg Octavia.

But of course comparisons with 70 years ago, while perphaps interesting from a historical viewpoint, merely invite ridicule in any serious discussion.

Of course, we know where the extra profitability for the Brighton Hacks goes (the £40k plate premiums), but I doubt if Daisy does!!
