The driver, who goes by Dills_Taxi on TikTok and lives in Colchester, has amassed about 450,000 views after uploading a clip of him on the A12.
The ongoing roadworks on the A12’s London-bound carriageway see three lanes merge into two near Stanway.
In the clip, he overtakes more than 50 cars using the outside lane, waiting until further down to merge in safely.
Speaking to the Gazette, he said: "As a taxi driver, I am on the road all day every day and see competent and incompetent drivers.
“There is nothing wrong with the clip, I obeyed the Highway Code.
“People are just sheep and all sit there queueing. I moved over safely and carried on going."
According to the Highway Code, drivers must “follow signs and road markings and get into the lane as directed”.

Rule 134 also states: "In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily.”
Since the clip went viral, he has received plenty of support, with some even calling it "great driving".
However, other motorists were quick to slam the manoeuvre claiming it is "immoral".
The driver added: "About 95 per cent of people commented and agreed, but there is the odd few who have called me names, say I shouldn’t be doing it, I just reply and say read the Highway Code.
“I even had a few police officers reply and say it’s perfectly allowed.
“Ironically I have seen more people doing it now, so maybe they’ve seen my video.”

The driver added how he uses other cheats in Colchester to avoid long queues.
He said: “I usually do it at roundabouts.
“On Clingoe Hill going up towards the Hythe, everyone queues in the left and sometimes the queue can go back to Wivenhoe.
“I just jump in the right and still turn right but go around the roundabout and towards Haven Road.
“Sometimes you get the odd dirty look or beep, but I know what I have done isn’t wrong.
“I will say it again, people are just sheep. Some may feel scared it isn’t allowed or they won’t get let in, but there’s nothing wrong with it.”
