Post subject:  Taxi driver wins by election to stop congestion charge

This is news rather than politics I feel but feel free to move it if opinions differ

The Conservative win in a Cambridge City Council by-election is the “nail in the congestion charge’s coffin”, according to a local MP, as he called for the “hated” scheme to be scrapped.

Mohamed Delowar Hossain became the first Tory on the city council since 2012 after winning the King’s Hedges by-election on Tuesday night.

The vacancy occurred after Alex Collis, Labour’s ex-deputy leader, resigned over the plan to make drivers pay tolls.

Cllr Hossain, a taxi driver who campaigned on an anti-congestion charge platform, won the seat after receiving 622 votes, compared with the 598 votes for Labour’s Zarina Anwar.

Responding to the victory, Anthony Brown, Tory MP for South Cambridgeshire, called for the “dreadful driving tax” to be ditched.

Mr Brown said: “Congratulations to Delowar and his team for a phenomenal victory, both in the by-election and in the battle against the hated congestion charge.

“The residents of King’s Hedges have spoken loud and clear, with this victory being part of a wider voter rebellion against new driver charges, which are unpopular all over.

“They are deeply unpopular for all people, rich or poor, working or retired - they all hate it.”

there's more but it's a really long read and I think we've got the gist
