New name for Harrogate taxi firm following acquisition by York company

A Harrogate taxi company is to be renamed after being acquired by a growing York-based firm.

Elite Taxis, which is based on Claro Road, came under new management on Monday, when it was bought by York Cars Taxis, and will be rebranded as Dash within the month.

York Cars is one of York’s biggest taxi companies, with 15 locations in the area, and Elite’s 30 drivers brings its fleet to around 200 cars.

Manager Billy Iqbal told the Stray Ferret:

“When we bought York Cars in 2014, we had 15 drivers, and that increased more than tenfold over the next nine years.

“We did it by providing a great service to the people of York, and now we’re looking to expand and provide a great service to people in Harrogate and the surrounding area. Ultimately, our aim is to expand across Yorkshire, into Leeds and West Yorkshire too.”

Dash will provide a 24-hour-a-day service, and customers will be able to book by phone or via the Dash Request A Ride app, which is free to download on Google Play or Apple Store. Payment can be made by card, Google, Apple Pay or cash.

York Cars Taxis now intends to enlarge its fleet and is recruiting new drivers in Harrogate and York to meet demand. Drivers’ rent is charged at 15% and capped at £75 regardless of takings.

That seems a very reasonable proposition.

Round here they tend to work on about that figure but drivers are mostly hackney. The majority nof firms prefer split purse and don't give their owner drivers a fair crack of the whip.

Good to know they'll only charge a maximum settle of £75 for a single day :?

The drivers would have to take £500 for the cap to operate. I wonder how many days they take in excess of £500? :-o

I read that as "per week".

You really think anyone would shell out £450 for a 6 day week?

Well they might if they made the £3k+ in fares that they'd have to earn for the £450/six-day cap to become relevant.

But the £75 fee cap is largely academic if it's a daily rate, so no-one's going to be shelling out £450 for a six-day week.

On the other hand, I can't seriously see it as meaning that the cap is £75 per week.

If that was the cap, then what to cars normally pay? £50/60 per week, say? I don't believe it [-(

that's about right for some areas it's only in the big cities where they get greedy and start asking for a ton or two and although Addy lee ask for a monkey that includes the car.

When I started in St Andrews in 1998, the HC-only office was charging about a ton per week :-o

Maybe it is £75 max per week for the firm in the article, but somehow that doesn't ring true for a PH circuit in the likes of York in 2023.

(Tried to find a bit more detail on their website and Facebook etc, but no luck.)

I tried that too.

Was tempted to ring and ask. But temptation was resisted.

I would be amazed if it wasn't £75 a week.

What a score for York Cars, won't be long before we see North Yorkshire Council licensed PHVs working in York for them, already has Wolves and Ashfield District Council vehicles working for them in the City.
