Glenrothes is more trouble than St Andrews, but it's still not the most obvious place I'd expect this kind of thing to happen, but of course it could happen anywhere, but stone throwing and the like doesn't usually cause injuries. Two people were taken to hospital after a brick was launched at their taxi from a bridge in Glenrothes. Taxi drivers in the area say there is a growing problem with youths throwing rocks, bricks and sticks from bridges at their vehicles – warning someone could be seriously injured or killed. At about 12.30am today, a taxi carrying two passengers was targeted as it made its way along Kinglassie Road towards Glenrothes. The brick smashed through the car window and left two people injured. A photo on social media shows one man covered in blood, with a cut to his head. The injured couple were treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Kirkcaldy Hospital. It is understood the driver of the taxi, operated by Kirkcaldy Cabs, was uninjured. Police have condemned the “reckless behaviour” and are investigating. It is the latest in a number of similar incidents where missiles have been thrown from bridges in the area. In July motorists were lucky to escape injury after wheelie bins were launched from a bridge spanning the same road. ‘It’s a growing problem’ Local taxi firms say missiles thrown from bridges have been a growing problem in recent weeks. A spokesperson for Glenrothes-based Raja Taxis told The Courier someone would soon be seriously injured or even killed unless those responsible were stopped. He said: “It’s been a growing problem for a number of weeks now. “We’ve had reports of bricks and rocks thrown from bridges at our cars. “Only a couple of weeks ago one of our drivers reported having large blocks of wood hurled down at his car. “There have also been obstacles left in the middle of the road trying to block vehicles. “It’s only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or even killed. “It’s absolute madness.” The incident has been condemned as “entirely reckless” by police. Brick thrown at taxi in Glenrothes ‘entirely reckless act’ Sergeant David Leslie, of Glenrothes Police Station, said: “We were made aware of a brick thrown at a taxi on the B921 between Glenrothes and Kinglassie shortly after 12.25am. “Two passengers, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital for treatment. “This was an entirely reckless act which led to two people suffering injuries and could easily have led to more serious consequences. “We are aware of similar incidents where items have been thrown at vehicles and inquiries are ongoing. “We are also carrying out additional patrols in the area.” Police are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or was in the area at the time to call 101, quoting incident reference 0108 August 6. |

Boy, 14, charged after concrete slab thrown at taxi from pedestrian flyover A 14-year-old boy has been charged after a concrete slab was thrown at a taxi from a pedestrian flyover, leaving two people injured. The vehicle was struck on the B921 in the town of Glenrothes, Fife, as it headed towards Kinglassie at about 12.30am on Sunday. A man and a woman, both 37, were taken to Glenrothes Hospital for treatment. It followed two similar incidents at the same spot where vehicles were hit by wheelie bins from above. One was thrown at about 1am on Sunday 16 July and the second at about 3.55am on Wednesday 19 July. No one was injured but both cars were damaged. On Thursday, Police Scotland confirmed a 14-year-old boy had been arrested and charged in connection with the incidents. A force spokesperson said: "The boy has been released on an undertaking to appear at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court at a later date. "A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal." |

Another good reason not to put kids in the front of the car  Driver was lucky, though, as was the passenger and his wife, I suppose, since it could obviously have been a lot worse. *Lots* of small flyovers/pedestrian walkways like this in the Glenrothes area. 12" concrete slab, eh? The family had been travelling along the B921 from Kirkcaldy having enjoyed a night out at a wedding when their taxi windscreen was suddenly smashed with by a 12-inch piece of concrete. Recalling the terrifying moment, Amanda told the Record: "It came out of nowhere, we didn't see anything from the road - not a person, another car, nothing. Suddenly there was a huge smashing noise. "We thought we had crashed into another car at first. We couldn't believe it was a big brick that had been launched through our windscreen." The slab fell around 16ft from the flyover and directly into the passenger side of the vehicle before smashing into Terry's face, causing the skin around his eyebrow and eyelids to tear open. Thankfully, the couple's children were left uninjured. Amanda continued: "I just felt a seriously sharp stabbing pain in my head, I put my hand to my skull and there was blood all over my hand. I just kept thinking, what was that? Are the kids hurt? Are they okay? It was really scary. I was so worried in case the kids were hurt. "We came to a sudden stop and the kids were screaming - we had no idea what had just happened. Once I checked that they were okay, we got out of the car and the driver called the police. "But then I turned and saw my husband's face. There was so much blood pouring from it. He had bits of skin literally hanging from his face because it had hit him so hard. He was bleeding so much that I thought he was going to die." Shocking images from Saturday night show Terry's face covered in blood with a deep gouge pictured above his right eyebrow. Amanda's head can also be seen oozing with blood, while the windscreen of the taxi has been left completely destroyed. Terry was given a number of stitches while Amanda was offered pain relief. She said: "We don't even know how many stitches he has, there are so many. They go from his eyelid and across his face. How that brick didn't catch his eye, I'll never know. We suspect his glasses might have saved his eye. Doctors told us it will scar. He's lucky to be alive." Six days on from the horror ordeal, Amanda said her husband is only just beginning to recover and that he is now able to open his right eye. Meanwhile, the mum-of-two, who is a full-time carer, has started to suffer from excruciating headaches every morning. She said: "Terry wasn't able to open his right eye until Thursday, so it is good he can see again. He also had headaches for a couple of days after the incident, but they seem to have worn off. "I am, however, enduring awful migraines every morning. I'm prone to headaches but this is like a pain in my head I've never had before. I'm hoping it's only temporary." Amanda said: "He's had to take sick leave because, legally, he cannot drive right now. We have no idea how long it will take for him to recover and he only gets 90 per cent pay for three months before it starts to drop down. "As well as the physical aspect of all of this, we'll probably be left out of pocket, too, but at least we are all still alive. My whole family was almost entirely wiped out over something so senseless." Police yesterday confirmed a 14-year-old boy was arrested and charged in connection with a series of incidents where items were thrown from a pedestrian flyover in Glenrothes. Fife Council chairman of Community Safety, councillor David Graham, blasted the incident as "appalling". He said: “I was horrified and appalled to hear of this very serious incident which occurred on the B921 recently. People need to feel safe in the communities around us and therefore work continues in Fife through the Community Safety Partnership and other agencies to work together to encourage positive behaviours from people in all walks of life while raising awareness of the devastating consequences that criminal activity can have in our communities." Chap's a bus driver. Not sure what kind of buses he drives, but obviously he'll be more aware than most about the dangers of this kind of thing. And because under-22s now have free bus travel anywhere in Scotland, there's been a huge increase in incidents - particularly related to buses and bus stations etc - as teenagers rampage round the country on their free buses, courtesy of the SNP Government (actually, it's English taxpayers subsidising it all, in effect - but, I mean, austerity and all that  ).I'll get my own bus pass in January, so might be joining them a bit more often than I currently use the buses, but ironically the free buses for the teens has made the thought of using the buses slightly less attractive for oldies like me  (Not to mention the free buses for students in St Andrews just back from their trip to NYC, skiing holiday, or whatever ](./images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif "Brick wall") )But, of course, the downside associated with free buses is all in the public imagination, and not grounded in facts, according to the do-gooders. And, even if there is some truth in it all, it's only a small minority, blah, blah. According to Google, the bus pass age is 60 in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and London  In England (apart from London), it's the state pension age, currently 66. I'll be 60 in January. Might have said I'm currently in my sixtieth year, which I thought might cause confusion  (When you're born, you're in your first year until you're 1-year-old, etc, etc  )
