A55: Road reopens after Conwy county taxi death crash

A motorist has died after a taxi crashed on the A55, leading to hold-ups lasting for more than eight hours.

The driver died at the scene at Dwygyfylchi, Conwy county, between junctions 16 and 17 at about 05:55 BST.

A 23-mile (37km) section eastbound from junction 11 for Llandegai to junction 19 for Glan Conwy was shut all morning while North Wales Police investigated.

The Premier Group confirmed it was one of its taxis - a white Hyundai - that was involved in the crash.

In a statement, the company said: "The management and staff are currently assisting North Wales Police with their investigation.

"Our sincere thoughts go out to the family of the deceased person."

Police said the dead person's next of kin and the coroner had been informed.

Motorists had faced a 39-mile (63km) detour before a single carriageway reopened eastbound at Dwygyfylchi on Saturday afternoon.

It was not until shortly before 19:00 that both lanes reopened.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it sent crews from Llanfairfechan and Llandudno to the scene.

Police update on A55 probe after man died in 'stolen' taxi smash

Police are continuing to investigate what happened in the moments leading up to a fatal crash involving an allegedly stolen taxi. The serious crash took place between Penmaenmawr and Conwy on Saturday, October 28, just before 6am. North Wales Police said the vehicle’s occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.

The white Hyundai car involved was found embedded in the wall with its bonnet partially suspended in mid-air, according to a Welsh Government spokesperson commenting on the repairs needed to a sea-facing wall following the crash. The car belonged to Bangor -based taxi firm the Premier Group, who spoke out this week on social media to state the vehicle was stolen.

The Welsh Ambulance Service sent three vehicles to the crash site, while two appliances were initially dispatched by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service. A section of the eastbound carriageway was closed off by police from junction 16 of at A55 at the Puffin Roundabout.

Issuing a further update a week on from the incident, a North Wales Police spokesperson said: "Our investigations into this incident are ongoing, including enquiries concerning the suspected taking of a motor vehicle without consent. This is a live investigation and therefore we advise members of the public not to speculate on social media and to respect the privacy of the man’s family at this difficult time.

"We continue to appeal for anyone who was travelling along the A55 Eastbound towards the Dwygyfylchi area between 5am-6am and may have witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage that could assist our investigations." To contact the force, use their website or call 101, quoting reference A172376.

Taxi passenger stole car and died after crashing

A taxi passengers stole the vehicle while almost three times over the drink-drive limit and died after crashing on a dual carriageway, an inquest has heard.

Kian Collier, 22, was not wearing a seatbelt and died of multiple injuries in October last year.

Mr Collier, from Old Colwyn, crashed the stolen taxi on the A55 at Dwygyfylchi, near Conwy in north Wales.

His family described him as a "shy lad" who "excelled in all sports".

Kate Robertson, the assistant coroner for North Wales East and Central, said Kian had been a passenger in a taxi in the early hours of 28 October 2023.

She said he then took the white Hyundai Ioniq without the driver's consent.

Bangor-based company Premier Group, which owned the vehicle, previously confirmed the Hyundai was stolen from them.

Gordon Saynor, a forensic collision investigator with North Wales Police, said a traffic camera had captured the car disappearing out of sight behind a brow.

The inquest in Ruthin was told there were no witnesses to the collision.

Mr Saynor said that "after a kerb strike by the front wheel the car careened across the carriageway and hit metal railings and a stone wall".

A lack of deceleration marks at the scene meant he couldn't determine the speed of the vehicle on impact but said "it was well in excess of the 30mph limit".

He said Kian was not wearing seatbelt at the time, and a post mortem examination found 224mg per litre of alcohol in his blood - the legal driving limit is 80mg per litre.

Ms Robertson found there was no evidence to say what caused Kian to lose control of the car while negotiating a left hand bend.

She concluded that Mr Collier died as a result of a road traffic collision.

She ended by passing on her condolences to his family saying "He had his whole life ahead of him.

"To lose somebody in such circumstances is incredibly tragic."

When the fault for this lies firmly with the victim I would say it isn't a tragic death it's Karma for behaving in an out of control and wreckless way.
