Can't say I've ever noticed this making any difference to the ranks here locally, but maybe I've just not being paying attention, and to be fair the shortage seems to happen a bit earlier in the day than I'm normally out as a night owl :-o

But even among the Muslim drivers in the trade, there seems to be a huge difference of opinion as regards the relevance of Ramadan and working 8-[

'Woober', though

Woober reveals driver shortages over Ramadan period

https://www.worcesternews.co.uk/news/24 ... an-period/

A TAXI service in Worcester has warned customers of driver shortages during Ramadan.

Woober taxis, based in The Cross near Foregate Street in Worcester, announced it would be short of drivers between the hours of 5.30pm and 8pm over the next four weeks.

This is to allow their drivers, who have been fasting all day for Ramadan, to eat and drink.

A statement from the company said: "Attention to all our customers! Ramadan Alert.

"For the next 4 weeks between the hours 5.30pm till around 8pm we will be short of drivers.

"As our drivers will be heading home to Eat as they have been Fasting all day.

"Sorry for the inconvenience."

Ramadan began on Tuesday, March 12. Muslims do not eat or drink during hours of daylight.

Fasting during Ramadan is a requirement for all Muslims from a young age, in some cases beginning as early as 10.

Worcester News has approached Woober for a further comment but they have not responded to our request.

A spokesperson for Blue Star Taxis said: "This concerns most of the drivers. All firms in Worcester will be following this.

"Most taxi drivers in Worcester are Muslim, so during this time it would be very difficult to get a taxi.

"It will be the same across the board and other companies.

"Generally this time of the year, drivers are already operating on low energy because of fasting and they make time to pray more."

A spokesperson for Cathedral Cars said: "There will only be a few cars working during this time.

"We will have private drivers in place who will replace our regular drivers during those times up until the end of Ramadan in April."

Harris Saleem, who is involved with the Worcester Taxi Association and Worcester Muslim Welfare Association, was surprised to hear taxi firms would be short of drivers.

"It's the first week of Ramadan, it's obviously something that's very religious, but it doesn't stop you working," he said.

"They fast all day long from dawn until dusk but we all still work during Ramadan - it's something very different.

"People are independent so it's up to them but I have never heard of that."

The date for Ramadan changes every year as the Islamic calendar follows the phases of the moon, known as the lunar cycle.

It starts when the moon can be seen in Mecca, the holiest city in Islam.

Ramadan will last 30 days ending after which Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated.

The only time I've ever noticed it is when Ramadan ends and they all have a giant feast and get together.

License to print money then. :D

Pure advertorial in the form of a customer apology, essentially :?

For example, including the photo caption the word dedicated/dedication is used four times :-o

TAXI firm leaders have praised the drivers who worked during Eid so as not to let customers down as normal service resumes.

Maz Shakil, a spokesperson for Worcester-based taxi firm Woober, said it had been a busy time as Muslims marked Eid on Wednesday, the end of Ramandan and one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar.

Drivers reminded customers that there may be a shortage of drivers as Muslims across the city celebrated Eid by visiting the mosque or spending time with friends and family.

Mr Shakil said: "We extend our warmest wishes of Eid Mubarak to all who celebrated this joyous occasion.

"This Eid marked one of our busiest days of the year, and we are truly grateful to all the dedicated drivers who stepped up to cover the increased demand.

"While we strived to accommodate as many requests as possible, we regret any inconvenience caused to clients whose jobs we were unable to fulfill.

"As we resume full operations, our commitment to delivering smiles to our customers remains unwavering.

"At Woober, we take pride in not just being a taxi company but a dedicated member of the local community.

"We look forward to continuing to serve and support our community with passion and dedication."

...noticed someone in the comments mention this - obviously not part of the PR/comms/advertorial script :-o

But that's what I call 'dedication', as Roy Castle used to sing on Record Breakers
