Mr Dale said he was very concerned for his own safety and that of other drivers

A taxi driver from Stoke-on-Trent said he was very nervous about returning to work after being attacked by a passenger with a knife.

Darren Dale was injured as he took a fare home from a night out in Hanley on Saturday, and said he had never expected the journey "to turn the way it did."

Mr Dale, a taxi driver for 23 years, was slashed to the head and side.

An 18-year-old man had been arrested and bailed on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm, criminal damage and robbery, said Staffordshire Police.

Mr Dale said he was attacked in a dispute over a mobile phone, which the passenger had initially asked him to hold on to until they could get cash from home to pay the fare.

The passenger then wanted the phone back before the end of the journey, and Mr Dale said he handed it over, before taking it back when the customer went to get out of the car.

That led to a knife being pulled and threats being made, said the driver, who was chased around the car in the attack.

He said he had had "ordeals" during 23 years of doing the job, but "nothing on this level or scale," and the "town was getting scary to work in."

Mr Dale said he wanted to speak out about what happened as he was concerned for not just his own safety, but that of his fellow taxi drivers.

Staffordshire Police said it had arrested a man following an assault in Stoke-on-Trent at about 05:30 GMT on 16 March.

It confirmed a man in his fifties was attacked while inside a car by another man with a knife on Janson Street, Hanford, and suffered minor injuries to his head.

An 18-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent had been arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm, criminal damage and robbery.

He had since been released on police bail while inquiries continued, the force said.

This is a slightly more detailed version, and I don't think there's anything particularly new here. But interesting to read it in detail, then compare the statement by police at the end, as highlighted :?

Either the victim is exaggerating his injuries a tad, or the police are downplaying them :?

Cabbie lucky to be alive after stabbed by knife-wielding clubber over £20 fare

Darren Dale was stabbed in Hanford

A taxi driver stabbed by a knife-wielding Hanley clubber over a £20 fare has spoken out about the terrifying ordeal. Darren Dale was left with several stab wounds after he was attacked by a customer on the morning of March 16.

The 53-year-old said his passenger was ‘chatty’ throughout the journey from the city centre. But the situation took a turn for the worst when the trip came to an end on Janson Street, in Hanford.

Darren, from Sneyd Green, said: “He started to threaten me. I leaped out of the car. I was so stressed. At this point I thought ‘Oh my God, what am I going to do.’ I went towards him and pushed him away. That’s when he swiped at me in different directions. It was a very mad ordeal.”

The dad-of-one says he managed to get back into his car and reversed out of the cul de sac.

Darren said: “I wanted to keep him in sight, he just followed me up the road. I was on the phone to the emergency services and I could feel my shirt getting wetter and wetter with blood.”

Staffordshire Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service found Darren in nearby Brendale Close. He was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Medics told Darren he had a lucky escape.

He added: “I have two cuts on my head in two different directions, one of them is very deep. I also got a stab wound in my side. They said I was lucky that it hit one of my ribs. It was terrible.”

The driver had never experienced anything like that before in all 23 years of being a cabbie in the city.

He said: “I’ve had all sorts of ordeals in the past, people running off so they don’t pay the fare, people being sick in the car, not paying for the mess, but I’ve never experienced anything on this scale.

“I don’t think anyone should be considering going out with a knife for a night out. All my family are saddened by it. Everybody is upset it happened.”

Police have arrested and bailed an 18-year-old youth in connection with the incident.

A police spokesman said: "We have arrested a man following an assault in Stoke-on-Trent. A man in his 50s was attacked whilst inside a car by another man with a knife on Janson Street. The victim suffered minor injuries to his head and was treated at the scene. We arrested an 18-year-old man, from Stoke-on-Trent, on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm, criminal damage and robbery. He has since been released on police bail while enquiries continue."

So no mention at all of the stab wound to the side, which could have killed the driver if the knife hadn't hit a rib :-o

And while he may have literally been 'treated at the scene', he was also taken to hospital, which isn't mentioned [-(

Even more oddly, read what police said in isolation and you'd never even guess it was trade-related. It just happened 'in a car' [-X

I know police have to use factual, unemotional language for stuff like this, but, I mean...
