Man charged with posting offensive material online has taxi licence revoked https://cumbriacrack.com/2024/08/10/man ... e-revoked/ A man who has been charged with posting offensive material online has had his taxi licence revoked. Cumberland Council said it had taken ‘decisive action to protect public safety’ by revoking the licence after he was charged earlier this week with a serious racially aggravated offence. Taxi driver Gerard Glaister, of Workington, was arrested by Cumbria police on August 8 and has been charged in connection with posting racially motivated offensive content online. The charge relates to sending a communication of an indecent or grossly offensive nature, which is racially aggravated due to the content of the posts. He is scheduled to appear at Carlisle Crown Court on August 13. Cumberland Council said when it received the information from the police, it conducted an immediate and thorough review of the driver’s hackney carriage licence. It said given the severity of the charges, and under the delegated powers provided to the council, the decision was made to revoke the driver’s licence with immediate effect in the interest of public safety. A Cumberland Council spokesman said: “This action sends a clear and strong message that we will not tolerate any behaviour that threatens the safety, dignity, or trust of our community. The nature of these charges is deeply concerning, and we have acted swiftly to remove this individual from a position of public responsibility. Those involved in criminal activities will be held accountable.” The council’s licensing department said it reassured the public that the safety and well-being of residents were paramount, and it would continue to enforce stringent standards to ensure that all licensed taxi drivers in Cumberland meet the highest levels of conduct. They added: “Public safety is our top priority, and we will not hesitate to take immediate action when it is at risk. We stand firm against any form of discrimination and will continue to work closely with the police to uphold these standards.” |

Think it's a little more than that. He hasn't had his license revoked for voicing an opinion, he has had it revoked for possibly breaking the law. |

Sellafield worker Lee Joseph Dunn, of Church Street, appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this afternoon (Monday). Dunn pleaded guilty to one offence. He admitted sending, by means of a public electronic communications network, a message that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character. His crime occurred on July 30 and 31 and involved three shared Facebook posts. Prosecutor George Shelley said Dunn had posted three separate images. The first one showed a group of men, Asian in appearance, at Egremont crab fair 2025, with the caption: “Coming to a town near you.” The second also showed a group of men, Asian in appearance leaving a boat on to Whitehaven beach. This, said Mr Shelley, had the caption: “When it’s on your turf, then what?” A final image showed a group of men, again Asian in appearance, wielding knives in front of the Palace of Westminster. There was also a crying white child in a Union flag T-shirt. This was also captioned, said Mr Shelley, with the wording: “Coming to a town near you.” Cumbria Police had confirmed before the hearing that Dunn had been charged with posting offensive and racially aggravated content online. Dunn was said by his lawyer, Andrew Gurney, to have apologised for his online actions. He had removed the offensive content he posted, and was given credit for this by the district judge, a John Temperley. Dunn was handed an immediate eight-week jail term — discounted by a third from 12 weeks in view of his guilty plea — by district judge John Temperley. Last week the same judge had given 31-year-old Billy Thompson, of Victory Crescent, Maryport, an immediate 12-week sentence. Thompson had written a racially aggravated Facebook post which contained emojis both of an ethnic minority person and a gun. Sentencing Thompson, Judge Temperley had said of the zero tolerance approach being taken by courts: “This offence, I’m afraid, has to be viewed in the context of the current civil unrest up and down this country. And I’ve no doubt at all that your post is connected to that wider picture. “I don’t accept that your comments and the emojis that you posted were directed at the police. I’ve read in the case summary of the comments you made on arrest which clearly demonstrate to me that there was a racial element to the messaging and the posting of these emojis. “That has to be reflected in the sentence as does there need to be a deterrent element in the sentence that I impose, because this sort of behaviour has to stop. “It encourages others to behave in a similar way and ultimately it leads to the sorts of problems on the streets that we’ve been seeing in so many places up and down this country. This offence is serious enough for custody.” |

There are a lot of people being sent to prison for recent events, who wouldn't have been sent to prison 6 months ago. I saw a quote recently that said the UK jailed more people for stuff they said on the internet than Russia.

I personally think they did the right thing, jailing people within a few days, because they pleaded guilty undoubtedly stopped this situation from getting worse. |

I think the strong stance was warranted, Extreme Right and Anti-Facists have been been dealt with using Prison time. Disagreeing with CC a bit though. The people charged have been told by their Briefs, "You are bang to rights, an early Guilty plea will get you a third off", that means progressing straight to Crown Court for sentence. |
