The Evening Standard (London) July 25, 2006 Tuesday HEADLINE: Cabbies vow to appeal over Tower Bridge speed tickets BYLINE: DAVID WILLIAMS AN ATTEMPT to get thousands of speeding tickets overturned for offences on Tower Bridge is to go to appeal after magistrates threw out the case today. Seven drivers of black cabs and two other defendants claimed they should not be convicted of breaking the 20mph speed zone because the signs were the wrong colour. They also claimed that there was inadequate signage and they could not therefore be convicted. But at Marylebone Magistrates' Court, District Judge Mike Snow rejected their arguments. Richard Massett, from the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association which had supported the case, said: "We are disappointed and are considering an appeal." Paul Smith, founder of Safe Speed road safety campaign, said: "The signs are illegal and the speed limit does not exist in law." .................................................................................. |

All licensed drivers are meant to be 'fit and proper'. Not perfect myself, but if I exceed the speed limit I don't go crying about the colour of the sign.

Yes, well done David on your victory. You will ahve noticed despite the works having been completed over a month ago, the cameras and limit remain. Obviously not for revenue earning capacity?

Those who make the law should ensure that it's legal, wrong colour sign's anen't legal. Theyre not following the law by having wrong colour sign's. The limit is therefore unenforcable. |

I noticed today the speed limit has finally been removed, the roadworks debris cleared, and the road returned to normal. I wonder how many hundreds of thousand of pounds they managed to rake in over the last two years?

If you break the speed limit then you deserve a ticket, and I have been caught on tower bridge, but, and this is a big but, if the limit is illegal then we should have our points removed and our money back. |

Exactly!...If they fail to ensure the zone is totally correct and within the law and it turns out that it is wrong....... dont forget, they are breaking the law by enforcing it.

Tower bridge needs more sign's to let people know that it's a 20mph limit. But maybe they don't want you to slow down .

As a foot note, the 'specs' cameras remain at Lower Thames Street, they are now enforcing a 30 MPH limit. Be warned. |
