Man charged with city centre taxi robbery

A man has been charged with robbery and kidnap after a taxi driver was forced to leave their vehicle which was then driven off.

Derbyshire Police said a report was made at 00:20 GMT on Monday that a taxi driver was threatened during a pick-up in Hartington Street, Derby.

Officers were told the passenger made the taxi driver leave the vehicle and then drove it away. The vehicle was found abandoned in Thorntree Lane at about 02:00.

Police said a 26-year-old man from Derby was detained just after 01:40 and charged with robbery, kidnap, assault, dangerous driving, possession of cannabis and amphetamine, driving without insurance, driving without a licence, and possession of an offensive weapon.

The force added the man was remanded into police custody on Tuesday morning and is due to appear in court later.

I don't get the kidnap charge surely if he forced the driver out that's not kidnapping ?

or was there more than 1 passenger in the vehicle ?

At a guess threats would have been made before the driver leaves the cab i.e. thug tells the driver to drive to a certain location under duress.
