…isn’t theft, say Lincolnshire police. A driver might be having a bad day, and have just forgotten to pay.
Police will not investigate fuel thefts from filling stations, even with cctv evidence.
You couldn’t make it up. Could you?

Surely the police can only make that assessment once they have spoken to the driver.

It's theft and the petrol station owners should make an official complaint.

Around my neck of the woods Shell stations have a notice on the pumps stating if you dont pay it is fraud and you will be prosecuted.

It depends if "they" can identify and find "you". With old Bill not interested, there' sim chnce of it. AFAIK a garage couldn't access the DVLA database to find the regstered keeper of a car, even if they did there's nothing in law that says a RK HAS to identify who was driving t that time fo such an alleged offence.

The chief constable of Lincolnshire police said on local tv news that garages should install pre pay or pay at the pump technology, but garages liked the system where customers came into the shop to pay because they would buy something in the shop.
Not much hope for your average Joe taxi driver getting a thief into court for non payment then, is there?
Asking for an upfront payment in a taxi is apparently not allowed in some areas, although I was never shy about pay now, travel later.
Theft is theft, and should be treated as such.

This problem will continue whilst the thieves get away with it.

This is typical of Lincolnshire police they have so few officers they are desperate to brush everything they can under the carpet.

Locally burglaries ,assaults , thefts etc are mostly dealt with by either issuimng a crime number with the instructions go claim off insurance or not investigated at all.

fare evasion, shoplifting and many more the instruction is go through the civil courts

I would write to your police and crime commisioner and copy in the chief constable, your MP and the home secretary.
It might not get you anywhere but it will make them all aware.

believe me they are well aware the PCC and chief constable are very close and this strategy is deliberate. They are also trying to persuade the government to give them a bigger budget so the press coverage might be part of that campaign
