Ipswich carer accused of sexually assaulting child in taxi

https://www.ipswichstar.co.uk/news/2476 ... hild-taxi/

An Ipswich chaperone for an autistic child has been accused of sexually assaulting the seven-year-old on his way to school in a taxi.

Mohammed Miah, of Dickens Road, has denied sexually touching the boy’s genital area over his trousers on at least two occasions between January 19 and 23.

The boy suffers with autism which make it difficult for him to speak and Miah, 58, was the passenger assistant in the taxi that was being driven by someone else.

The taxi driver had driven the boy to school with Miah beside him and as they pulled up by the front gate the driver looked around and saw Miah touching the boy, prosecutor David Baird told Ipswich Crown Court.

After checking CCTV from inside the taxi, the driver contacted the police who interviewed Miah.

The defendant said in his interview that on occasion he put his hand on the boy’s leg to calm him down and added it was never sexual and that he did not touch him in the groin area.

He said he would touch the boy’s hands to keep them warm and he repeated that he had done nothing wrong.

However, the prosecutor said that the defendant occasionally had his other hand on his own groin area while touching the boy and this was for his own sexual gratification.

Parts of the CCTV footage from inside the taxi were shown to the jury.

Miah had been in his role helping in the transportation of vulnerable young children from their homes to school for four months prior to the incident.

The trial continues.

Taxi driver says he watched Ipswich man touching child

A taxi driver for special educational needs children has told a court he watched a chaperone touching the thigh of a seven-year-old autistic boy in his cab.

Mohammed Miah, of Dickens Road in Ipswich, has denied sexually touching the boy’s genital area over his trousers on at least two occasions between January 19 and 23, 2021.

He is on trial at Ipswich Crown Court.

The boy suffers with autism which makes it difficult for him to speak and Miah, 58, was the passenger assistant in the taxi that was being driven by Anwar Muhammad.

Testifying on Tuesday, Mr Muhammad said he had driven the boy to school with Miah beside him and as they pulled up by the front gate the driver looked around and saw Miah “suspiciously” touching the boy’s thigh.

Mr Muhammad told Ipswich Crown Court: “I thought it was suspicious, and it was not right.

“We were told in no way are we allowed to touch the children and when I saw his hand on his thigh, I thought it was wrong.”

He explained that Suffolk County Council had issued a warning to assistants and drivers not to touch the children.

There was a camera in the back of the vehicle with signs warning passengers they were being filmed.

Mr Muhammad checked the footage and handed it over to his boss and added that he no longer wanted to work with Miah.

Under cross-examination, Mr Muhammad was asked why he did not confront Miah if he had suspicions.

“That wasn’t my job,” replied the driver.

The court previously heard Miah had told police he would touch the boy’s hands to keep them warm - however, Mr Muhammad said there was a heater in the taxi and he would turn it on whenever it was cold.

The trial at the court continues.
