Wasn't going to bother with this one Christmas warning-type news release, because it's quite formulaic, and classic use of the generic t-word, then a strict binary between HCs and PHVs (except for the 'taxi' roofsigns :-o ).

But there's a slightly more interesting follow-up spotcheck piece, so this, er, contextualises it...

Stay safe and smart with your taxi this Christmas

https://www.nelincs.gov.uk/stay-safe-an ... ristmas-3/

Many people enjoy a drink or two to see in Christmas and the New Year, meaning they often need a taxi to get back home.

This year, make sure you know which taxi or licensed Private Hire vehicle to get into by following this advice:

    • Always use a licensed vehicle.

    • Hackney Carriage Vehicles can pick up unarranged fares from the street. They have a taxi roof sign and a white licence plate on the rear bumper.

    • Private hire vehicles are not permitted to pick up from the street without being pre-booked. They have a half-moon door sign on the front two doors which says ‘advanced bookings only’, and a yellow licence plate on the rear bumper. Book by phone, email or in a private hire office. Never approach or accept a journey from a private hire driver which isn’t pre-booked.

    • When your booked vehicle arrives, make sure the driver can confirm your name and destination – check this before you get into the vehicle.

    • Always check the driver’s photo ID badge.

    • Never risk getting into a private hire vehicle which is not pre-booked.

    • Be aware of unlicensed drivers offering lifts through Facebook. Licensed Vehicles and drivers go through thorough checks to make sure that they are safe and roadworthy. There are significant public safety concerns around using unlicensed taxis.

If you’re having a drink, make sure to look after it. However, if you think your drink has been spiked, make sure to get medical help urgently and report the incident by calling 999 or 111.

Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, said:

“If you’re heading out this Christmas or New Year, remember to keep yourself safe and always make sure you are getting in a licensed taxi. The public’s safety is always our number one priority, and we want to reiterate how dangerous getting into an unlicensed taxi can be.

“In addition, we ask that you take care of your drinks during the festive period. If you think you or someone you know may have been spiked, make sure to report it immediately."

And North East Lincolnshire Council is not to be confused with the North Lincolnshire Council which also conducted spot checks recently

Anyway, not much to see here - out of 38 cars checked, only really the defective tyre particularly newsworthy - all the rest pretty small beer :-o

Not that I'm against them taking on the small stuff like this, but you could go round our ranks here and come up with a long list of stuff like this. But the vast majority of the time, no-one in authority bats an eyelid

But of course this maybe just reflects the wider environment of police 'crackdowns' and the like, which often seem more about tokenism and generating press releases, while the rest of the time things are just left to 'let rip' [-(

One driver suspended and others warned following taxi spot checks

https://www.nelincs.gov.uk/one-driver-s ... ot-checks/

North East Lincolnshire Council’s licensing team and Humberside Police have carried out a joint operation, spot checking random taxis.

38 Drivers were checked, alongside the condition of their vehicle, as well as their licence, insurance, tyres, lights and vehicle tax.

Licensing Enforcement Teams checked all drivers and general condition of the vehicles while Humberside Police checked the vehicles condition, tyres, and lights. The following issues were found during the inspections on the evening of Friday, 13 December:

    • 1 was immediately suspended for having a tyre under the legal limit
    • 1 driver was not carrying his badge
    • 1 Hackney bubble was not working
    • 1 unoccupied parked on double yellow lines –driver was working in a take away.
    • 1 so dirty you could not see door signs or number plate
    • 1 Where the plate was attached to the rear of the vehicle that was dangerous – removed by police officer at the time.
    • 3 seen that were quite dirty & required new door signs.

The council’s licensing team are responsible for issuing licenses to new and continuing taxi drivers, and carry out extensive checks on the vehicles to ensure that they are roadworthy and meet the required standards.

Throughout the year, the team carry out roadside spot checks to make sure that these standards are being kept to.

Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities said: “These are great results from an evening of inspections by Humberside Police and our Licensing Enforcement Team.

“Hackney Carriage drivers need to be aware of the rules they need to follow and should do so accordingly.”

He added: “It is also important for members of the public to remember they should only use a licensed taxi when getting anywhere.

“Keep yourself safe and always make sure you are getting in a licensed and private hire taxi. The public’s safety is always our number one priority, and we want to reiterate how dangerous getting into an unlicensed taxi can be.”

Covered in acid or had razor blades sticking out of it? Or something like that?

Nothing that unusual in cars getting a bit mucky this time of year roads in lincolnshire are often covered in mud spread by farm tractors. Unless a driver has lots of spare time getting your car cleaned can be a nightmare as car washes tend to be much busier this time of year. That said 10 minutes with a sponge and a bucket of water will get much of the mud off.

I would also mention that this is the least wealthy part of Lincolnshire and as such I would imagine the trade has less spare money to spend on car cleaning.
