It doesn't specifically say so, but this was presumably a money-up-front request.

Good call by the driver, then...unfortunately it all went pear shaped :-|

Carlisle woman whose card payment failed racially abused taxi driver

https://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/2489 ... xi-driver/

A CARLISLE taxi driver who asked a passenger to leave his cab because she could not pay was racially abused and assaulted.

Amy Thompson, 32, had wanted to hire the taxi from English Damside near the city centre on the evening of September 5 last year, magistrates heard.

She admitted a racially aggravated common assault. At Carlisle’s Rickergate court, prosecutor George Shelley outlined the offence.

Thompson got into the taxi at around 8.30pm and her card payment was declined “multiple times,” prompting the driver to ask her to get out of the taxi.

She refused to.

As a result, the taxi driver dialled 999. The officer on the call spoke to the defendant, explaining that the taxi driver was within his right to ask her to leave.

Responding to this, the defendant repeatedly used a racial slur towards the driver – behaviour which was recorded in the 999 call. As she was leaving, the taxi driver handed her a vape which she had left behind.

“She grabbed it from his hand and proceeded to hit him on the top of the forehead with the item by punching him,” said Mr Shelley.

Thompson then left - but without taking her bank card. It was through that card, bearing her name, that police were able to trace her.

A probation officer who interviewed the defendant, of Westward, Carlisle, said no pattern of offending was identified.

Magistrates adjourned sentencing so that enquiries can be made about the suitability of a curfew order as a possible punishment.

The defendant, formerly of Priory Road, Carlisle, must return to court on February 14 for sentence.

She was granted bail in the meantime but on condition that stays away from licenced premises in Botchergate between the hours of 5pm and 3am. Thompson must also stay away from the taxi driver she assaulted.

Poetic justice, much? If she hadn't been busy kicking off she might have remembered to take her card...

Sentencing. Funny thing here is that, unlike the last article, there's more of a confirmation that it was a money up front request. On the other hand, zero mention here that it was a declined card.

Woman racially abused and assaulted Carlisle taxi driver

A woman who racially abused and assaulted a Carlisle taxi driver has been ordered to completed a night time curfew and pay compensation to his victim.

Amy Thompson, 32, got into a cab in the city at around 8.30pm on September 5 last year.

After a discussion between Thompson and the driver about payment of the fare, he refused to transport her.

Prosecutor Diane Jackson told Carlisle Magistrates’ Court today that Thompson refused to leave the vehicle.

Police were called and informed her it was the driver’s right to decline a fare.

Thompson was then racially abusive to the driver, making a comment which was recorded at the scene, before striking him on the top of his head.

Thompson, of Westwood, Morton, Carlisle, left her bank card inside the vehicle, and had previously provided an address to the driver. “This has resulted in her being identified and arrested for the offence,” said Mrs Jackson.

In a statement, the driver spoke about the impact of the incident on him and of pain in the aftermath.

“It makes me feel sick when people racially abuse me. It makes me feel bad,” stated the driver, who spoke of living and working in this country for 30 years.

“I feel I cannot fight back. The way people discriminate against me because of the way I look makes me feel embarrassed.”

Thompson admitted a charge of racially aggravated assault by beating. Thompson told magistrates she had planned to pay the fare once she reached her address, and had been allowed to do previously.

“It was a massive mistake. I’ve been out of trouble so long,” said Thompson, who had not been in court for 15 years. “I’m not a racist. It was literally a slip of the tongue, to be honest. I was very drunk. I had had a horrible day.”

Magistrates said the offence was made worse because it was racially aggravated.

As punishment, Thompson must complete a six-month electronically monitored night time curfew and pay £200 compensation to the taxi driver.

Horrible woman.

I wonder if this individual has previously bumped drivers as it's most unusual to get money upfront unless going out of town.

Sussex, this line here suggests that maybe drivers have had problems getting the fare - she sounds like one of those who often has to go inside to get cash or card, or whatever, and maybe doesn't always reappear with the cash, or with a card, but it's not entirely clear.

Not a lot of that here, but a couple of weeks ago one of the drivers told me that a pair of females had bumped a few of the drivers from a particular rank to a particular address with a declined card. And it was generally in the afternoon, which you just wouldn't expect here at all :-o

And one of them had purple hair, he said :-o :-o

So a few days later, a woman with purple hair got in and asked to go to an address, which was the street next to the one where the drivers had been bumped :-o :-o :-o

I almost asked her to pay in advance, but didn't want a kick off, but obviously I was expecting something to happen.

But we got there, she paid, card was accepted and she just got out as normal...

Must have been the same woman, but maybe she knew she'd been rumbled, or maybe my dashcam put her off, or whatever :)
