South Wales Echo August 3, 2006, Thursday HEADLINE: Councillor leads call for traffic-calming Residents claim traffic-calming must be installed on a busy road before someone is seriously hurt or killed. People in Barry say traffic is going too fast along Robbins Lane. Now Councillor Richard Bertin has organised a petition for traffic-calming and is urging people to sign. He said: 'I saw a taxi travelling so fast that if a child had crossed in front of him he wouldn't have been able to stop.' To sign the petition contact Coun Bertin on 01446 736227. ............................................................................ |

But then why didn't he report the driver?

Probably because his statement was meaningless piffle and made just to get his name in the press and so that if traffic calming is deployed then that'll be a good excuse for a photo opportunity. I mean, you could be driving at 5mph and if a child crosses in front of you then you would't be able to stop. |

there a campaign on the TV/radio at the moment. hit a kid at 40 theres a 80% chance they'll die, hit them at 30 theres a 80% chance they live. i'm sure you've seen it some where. whats wrong with teaching your kids to stay of of the bloody road in the first place? i remember when i was a little kid, if i crossed the road i'd get a whack off mum or dad. these days they seem to be telling the kids the road is a safe place to play. "dont worry jimmy, when the car hits you it will be the drivers fault, we can sue him and get lots of money" |

Yes, it's the usual political corectness, just like with cyclists - they're more often on the pavements than the roads, few have lights, and bascically they just ignore every rule in the book. Yet the police ignore them, the politically correct describe them as 'vulnerable' at every opportunity, whereas thier vulnerability seems largely due to their own recklessness. Remember that EU proposal from a couple of years ago whereby it would automatically be the driver's fault if he collided with a cyclist? But let's face it, it's more or less like that now, at least to the extent that if there is a collision the motorist is deemed guilty until proved innocent. Of course, cyclists are inherently vulnerable, but the present approach merely shifts the blame and misses the point. |
