Isle of Wight man lost temper after Bournemouth taxi incident https://www.countypress.co.uk/news/2496 ... -incident/ A serial offender from the Isle of Wight cracked the windscreen of a taxi and threw a cup of coffee at the driver, after a mix-up saw him taken to the police station rather than the train station. Thomas Riordan, of William Street, Ryde appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, February 25. He entered guilty pleas to multiple offences, including four counts of drug driving, two counts of driving without insurance, two counts of driving without a licence, criminal damage and assault. The offences occurred on different dates last year. Court heard how, on March 3 in Bournemouth, Riordan got into a taxi with the intention of going to the train station and returning home to the Island. However, a mix-up saw the driver take him to the police station instead. Prosecutor, Leah Dillon, said this caused Riordan to become aggressive and he started to kick the taxi's dashboard. He proceeded to pick up a cup of coffee, throw it in the driver's face and he also hit the taxi's windscreen, forcing it to crack. Court heard how Riordan, who has 34 previous convictions for 79 offences, was sorry for his actions and had just wanted to go home. Defending, Michael McGoldrick, said the 28-year-old was under the influence and in an area he wasn't familiar with. He wanted to go to the train station, not the police station and "lost his temper", Mr McGoldrick said. He said Riordan did not deliberately aim the coffee cup, which was three quarters full, at the driver. The lid did not come off and he was not injured, Mr McGoldrick said. In another incident, on May 21, Riordan was seen by police driving a black Mercedes on Sandown Esplanade. In an attempt to evade officers, he got out the car on Carter Street and tried to "take off", Ms Dillon said. He was caught and blood readings found he was nearly five times the legal limit for BZE, a derivative of cannabis, and over three times the limit for cocaine. In a similar incident on September 2, police again saw Riordan driving a Mercedes and carried out checks on the vehicle. He turned into McDonald's car park, off Brading Road, Ryde and as he walked away from the vehicle he was detained by officers. On this occasion, blood readings found he was over 12 times the legal limit for cocaine and 16 times the limit for BZE. Riordan was given a 28 month disqualification from driving and ordered to pay fines and costs, totalling £1,018. |
