The driver also had the 'cheek' to return a customer's purse and pocket another £20.

A Glasgow cab driver who illegally picked up passengers charged them an "excessive" £90 for a six mile journey after one person was sick.

Private hire car driver Malik Faisal drove the customers from Dumbarton Road to Newlands and kept hiking the price up. He also found a purse in his vehicle after the journey and on returning it had the "cheek" to pocket another £20 for bringing it back.

Faisal's licence was suspended for three months by the city's licensing and regulatory committee today when councillors heard about this behaviour.

The meeting was told Faisal slammed on the brakes suddenly when a girl was sick on her coat in his vehicle - leading to a person hurting their head during the trip in November 2024.

Councillors were told how after finding a purse he turned up at the passenger's door and talked to her mother - receiving £20 for returning it. As a result of the incidents, a complaint was made to the taxi and private hire enforcement unit.

Committee chair councillor Alex Wilson said: "There are alarm bells ringing all over with this."

Addressing Faisal, councillor Sean Ferguson told him: "It is not for you to charge £20 to take property back."

He added: "You have pirated. An individual hurt their head when you stopped abruptly."

Councillor Wilson said: "There is a catalogue of errors. You should never have taken that fare. You quoted £30, you increased the fare and increased it again.

"You were taking excessive amounts of money for a journey that was nowhere near that amount."

Pointing out to Faisal how his insurance was invalid as he was operating illegally, councillor Wilson told him he had no right to demand an additional fee after a passenger was sick.

Councillor Wilson added: "You had the cheek to ask for money for returning an item."

He continued: "You should never have accepted a penny."

Faisal admitted he had made a mistake.

Councillors Ferguson and Leòdhas Massie wanted to revoke Faisal's licence completely.

But councillors Hanif Raja lodged a motion to suspend his licence for three months, which was agreed by the majority of the committee.

Oddly similar to the Salford story. A 3-month suspension is lenient IMO, but hey he admitted he made a mistake.

Says who? :-k

Look the fella did a lot of silly/unlawful stuff that night, but charging to return the purse that he didn't lose isn't one of them.

Yes, if he was just down the road or if he said he would return it when he was next in the area, then it could have been done on the house. But if he had returned to the city and the lady lived many miles away then why should a driver lose time and money when in respect of the lost purse he did no wrong.

Personally I would have popped into the police station and left it at that.

Of course, it would be instructive to know stuff like how far the driver had to travel to return the lost item, and precisely what was said in terms of payment etc.

But apart from the obvious wrongdoing, surely the driver deserves a medal for all this

By the sound of it, wouldn't be surprised if no other driver would take them because they were bladdered etc, and they offered the driver big bucks to take them, and his eyes lit up

So then they're puking up, and no doubt making a lot of noise, and he brakes when the vomit puts in an appearance. And one of them hits their head - how would that happen, precisely? And I wouldn't be surprised if it was the pax who shouted at him to stop when the puking started - that's the way it usually works, innit?

Not clear what kind of vehicle it was, but wouldn't be surprised if they were maybe standing up, or at least didn't have their seatbelts on, hence the sore head

Echoes of that case with the elite woman's footballer maybe - the driver's a bit stressed, they're jumping about shouting and swearing, but of course it's all the driver's fault if one of them falls over.

And don't forget this incident involving one of the councillors a couple of years ago.

And don't forget also that even since lockdown Glasgow councillors have thought fit to extend licensing hours, so for drivers it's working longer and later for even more drunken and aggressive punters - and that's just the tame ones. Way to go, councillors :-o
