This guy sounds so blootered it's just about possible to think he did think the driver was trying to attack him.

But 'following him up the garden path' is a potential goldmine for jokes

Man pulled knife and threatened to kill taxi driver

A DRUNKEN man pulled a knife on a taxi driver and threatened to kill him during an incident in Larkfield, a court has heard.

Anthony McVey brandished a blade at the man and attempted to strike him with it at a property on Stafford Road on December 5 last year.

The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to an assault charge at Greenock Sheriff Court this week.

He had been drinking at a pub in the town centre of Greenock earlier that evening, with staff booking a taxi to take him home.

McVey, who was described as being ‘heavily intoxicated’ at the time, asked to be taken to an address on Stafford Road.

When the car arrived at the property, he told the driver he did not have money for the fare and indicated that he would collect cash from house.

Having agreed to this, the man followed McVey up the garden path which led to the front door.

McVey then pulled out a black-handled knife and began ‘swiping’ towards the complainer.

He stated that he would ‘kill’ the driver – who then ran back to his car and locked the doors.

McVey, who is currently remanded at HMP Low Moss, followed him and struck one of the vehicle’s windows with the blade before he drove off.

The incident was reported to police, who subsequently cordoned off Stafford Road for a period.

A seven-centimetre (2.7-inch) blade recovered in the garden of the property was sent for analysis, with McVey’s DNA being found on its handle.

Defence solicitor Mark Chambers told the court that his client had previously been the victim of an attack on his doorstep.

He said McVey’s actions were the result of not knowing who was behind him on the garden path, and ‘suddenly’ being confronted by a ‘dark figure’.

Mr Chambers added: “He deeply regrets his conduct. Sobriety allows him to look at things differently.”

Sheriff James Varney described the offence as ‘serious’ and called for social work reports to be produced before sentencing McVey.

He was remanded in custody until the case next calls on April 16

Man who threatened to kill taxi driver in Greenock jailed

A GREENOCK thug who pulled a knife on a taxi driver in Larkfield and forced him to flee to his vehicle has been jailed.

The driver followed Anthony McVey to his front door after the 39-year-old claimed he'd have to go to his house to get money to pay for his journey.

But McVey pulled out a black-handled knife on his victim and chased the driver back to his vehicle, before striking one of its windows with the blade.

McVey was sentenced at Greenock Sheriff Court this week, having pleaded guilty to an assault charge at a 'first diet' hearing in March.

At that hearing, the court heard that McVey had been drinking at a pub in Greenock town centre on the evening of December and booked a taxi to take him home.

McVey was described as being 'heavily intoxicated' at the time of the incident.

When the car arrived at McVey's house, McVey told the driver he had no money for the fare and said he would have to collect cash from his house.

Having agreed to this, the driver followed McVey up the garden path which led to the front door.

McVey then pulled out a black-handled knife and began 'swiping' towards the complainer.

He stated that he would 'kill' the driver - who then ran back to his car and locked the doors.

McVey, who is currently remanded at HMP Low Moss, followed the driver and struck one of the vehicle's windows with the blade before the man drove off.

A blade measuring 2.7 inches (7cm) was recovered in the garden of the property was sent for analysis, and McVey's DNA was found on the handle.

McVey's defence solicitor told this week's sentencing hearing: "[In the past] He was confronted and assaulted by a violent individual, with a history of violence, and still has flashbacks when he finds himself in these circumstances.

"He is remorseful for his behaviour.

"A positive aspect is that he has a partner, and there is an action plan in place for when he is released from custody.

"Opportunities will be open for him through his partner, and there are positive testimonials."

Sentencing had been deferred following McVey's guilty plea to allow social workers time to prepare a background report.

Sheriff James Varney said there were 'inconsistencies in the account of the events' and said there was 'no alternative to custody' for McVey, who has previous.

He added: "Certain aspects [of the background report] give cause for concern, and there seems to be a lack of insight.

"It is clear that you chased the taxi driver and it is clear that you didn't learn anything from orders imposed in the past."

McVey was handed a two-year prison term, backdated to December 6, 2024.

He will also be on a 'supervised release order' for 12 months after he's allowed out of prison.
